Monthly Holidays & Themes
This month is dedicated to celebrating things that make you happy. It’s a known fact that happiness is contagious & sharing your happiness can bring a smile to someone’s face. The month reminds us that happiness can be found in even little things that we might not notice and that spreading the same joy amongst others can help make the world a better place. Be happy!
This is a holiday that reminds us of the beauty and value of bees. It also helps create an awareness of the dangers that honey bees face. Do you know there are 20,000 different species of bees all around the world? Bees serve an important role in our world as pollinators and you can help. This month attract bees to your garden with nectar plants & educate others on the conservation of bees.
Snack Idea
During the hot summer days in Arizona, there's nothing better than a nice, cold ice pop. To make it more fun, this month we suggest you try making them yourself - or better yet, with your kids, friends, or loved ones. Then celebrate a new culinary skill you have learned!

New Crisis Lifeline Number - 988
Starting on July 16, 2022, 988 has been designated as the new three-digit dialing code that will route callers to the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline. This dialing code is available to everyone across the United States.
988 is more than just an easy-to-remember number—it’s a direct connection to compassionate, accessible care and support for anyone experiencing mental health-related distress – whether that is thoughts of suicide, mental health or substance use crisis, or any other kind of emotional distress. People can also dial 988 if they are worried about a loved one who may need crisis support.
When people call, text, or chat 988, they will be connected to trained counselors that are part of the existing National Suicide Prevention Lifeline network. These trained counselors will listen, understand how their problems are affecting them, provide support, and connect them to resources if necessary.

Create a Celebration Collage
In the hustle culture we live in today, it’s easy to get caught up in the cycle of more -- do more, work more, make more, etc.
While achieving what you want in life, and reaching the levels of success you desire requires hard work and dedication, but somewhere along the way, we forgot the importance of celebrating our success. We need some positive reinforcement now and then.
Make time to celebrate. It can be as small or as grand as you choose. There’s only one rule: next time you accomplish something you’re proud of, you have to stop and celebrate before you do anything else.
| | |
There are many ways to celebrate, take a day off, buy a special treat, gift yourself flowers, throw a party, or create a celebration collage. If you choose the latter, here is how:
Grab yourself a large pinboard or a blank piece of cardstock, a stack of magazines, photos, quotes, messages, and any images that symbolize your success so far.
Welcome to your very own celebration collage! Stick or pin on something to symbolize everything you’re proud of achieving so far, and keep adding to it in the future.
Keep it somewhere you can see it every day and be reminded of how far you’ve come.

This Month's Mindfulness Practice
When we are listening mindfully, we are fully present with what we’re hearing without trying to control it or judge it. We let go of our inner clamoring and our usual assumptions, and we listen with respect to precisely what is being said. We listen to our own minds and hearts and, as the Quakers say, to the “still, small voice within.” We listen to sounds, to music, to lectures, to conversations, and, in a sense, to the written word.
For all of these kinds of listening to be effective, so we understand and remember what is being heard, we need a mind that is open, fresh, alert, attentive, calm, and receptive. We often do not have a clear concept of listening as an active process that we can control, but, in fact, mindful listening can be cultivated through practice.
| | |
Here are some mindful listening practices:
-
Wake Up Listening: Early morning is especially good for listening. Try this: As you wake up, instead of turning on the TV, your iPhone, or your computer, be still and just listen. In a rural setting, the sounds may be birds and animals waking up. In a city, sounds of outside action begin: garbage collection, building construction, traffic. On campus, the sounds of opening doors, feet walking in the hallways, other students talking. Listen for the soft sounds: a cat purring, leaves rustling. Rest your full attention on one sound until it fades away, then let another come to you. As thoughts come into your mind, gently let them go and return to the sound. Then get out of bed and enjoy the sound of the water in the shower.
-
In the Groove: Put on some music, maybe classical or slow tempo. Notice the sound and vibration of the notes, the sensations in your body as you listen, and the feelings the music brings up in you. When you notice thoughts arising, gently bring your attention back to the music. Breathe.

Essential Summer Wellness Tips
Ready for summer already? While it’s a glorious time of year, there are some health hazards to keep in mind, too. Don’t let the carefree, dog-days of summer get the best of you. Play it smart and you can have fun while also staying healthy, too. Here are 5 tips:
Eat Summer Foods
- Not only does eating seasonally mean you’re enjoying the best nutrients produce has to offer, but it also can be purchased directly from a local farm — an economic and environmental perk. Enjoy foods like garlic, radishes, arugula, carrots, bell peppers, and beets in the summer.
Stay Out of Intense Heat
- Arizona is hot, let's face it! So if you’re planning to spend time outdoors, ensure you’re staying hydrated and in the shade, if possible. Heat-related illnesses, known as hyperthermia, can cause issues like muscle cramps, nausea, confusion, slurred speech, rashes, dizziness, and worse. Heat illnesses can range from mild to deadly. Knowing the signs and staying inside in the heat of midday can help you avoid serious heat-related issues.
Wear Sunglasses
- Sunglasses aren’t just a fashion statement; they actually are useful in preventing serious eye conditions. Wear UV sunglasses to protect your eyes from excessive UV radiation, which can cause issues like cataracts and macular degeneration, according to eye experts.
Skip Dehydrating Drinks
- Dehydration can happen to the body any time, but it’s much more common in summer when you’re more likely to be outdoors enjoying different activities. It happens when we sweat and lose fluids and those fluids aren’t replaced. Drink plenty of water; for optimal hydration, skip caffeinated or alcoholic beverages.
Spend Time Relaxing
- On heat advisory warning days, make some fun plans to let loose and relax. You’ll do your health a favor: research shows those who relax have lower heart rates, less stress, and reduced symptoms of issues like anxiety and depression.
