Understanding the dynamics of the joint cartilage
Osteoarthritis, a degenerative disease in the joint, is a condition that is afflicting approximately 14% of adults. Laser Doppler vibrometry has been finding adoption in many biological sciences over the years, for example in hearing research or in the study of the skin response for haptics research. Upon hearing about vibrometry during her time at UCI Samueli School of Engineering, Dr. Gabriela Espinosa, now at Concordia University Irvine, was inspired to evaluate this measurement technology for the dynamic characterization of cartilage in the human knee.

Wind turbine blade dynamics
In an effort to advance the understanding and knowledge of wind turbine blade dynamics, Prof. D. Todd Griffith's group (co-authors: Yuanchang Chen, Ph.D., Alejandra Escalera Mendoza) conducted a one-of-a-kind study on a 3-bladed wind-turbine assembly. One of the reasons this study is unique is because of it’s focus on higher order modes, which hasn’t been done before. It will aid in improved model correlation, SHM (structural health monitoring) algorithm development and better aeroelastic simulation.

A novel mechanism for microfluidics
The SAWLab Saxony of the IFW Dresden developed a novel mechanism for microfluidics, which is driven by high-frequency sound waves. The method is based on the targeted change of the mechanical vibration plane of acoustic surface waves and significantly improves the microfluidic drive for lab-on-a-chip applications.
