Re: Vice Provost for Academic Personnel
To: Faculty and Staff
April 4, 2022
Dear Colleagues,

I write to share the news with you that effective June 30, 2022, Dr. Teenie Matlock will be stepping down from her role as Vice Provost for Academic Personnel (VPAP) and on July 1, 2022, she will return to faculty to continue her research on the use and understanding of everyday language, especially the role of metaphor in public discourse.

Dr. Matlock served as VPAP for four years, and during her tenure, she oversaw all processes of hiring and advancing academic appointees at UC Merced. Dr. Matlock also engaged in systemwide review of policies related to academic personnel and helped other senior leaders ensure academic appointees were complying with university and systemwide policies.

In acknowledgement of her work and accomplishments, Dr. Matlock was recently awarded the Athena Academic Leadership Award by the Women in Technology Initiative at the University of California. I hope you will join me in thanking Dr. Matlock for her years of service in the VPAP role.

In anticipation of the vacancy, I intend to appoint an Interim Vice Provost for Academic Personnel to begin July 1, 2022. The excellence of the UC Merced faculty is the cornerstone of the university, and the VPAP plays a critical role in assuring that faculty accomplishment is promoted, recognized, and rewarded in the merit and promotion system.

Qualified candidates are members of UC Merced’s academic senate who have achieved the rank of full professor before July 1, 2022, who are actively engaged in research and teaching, and who have relevant administrative leadership experience. Individuals interested in the role can view the full job description here.

Confidential review of nominations and expressions of interest will begin immediately and will continue until an appointment is made. Please direct nominations and questions to Michael Richards, Senior Advisor and Chief of Staff ([email protected]).

To be ensured full consideration, please submit a cover letter/letter of interest and curriculum vitae no later than April 22, 2022. Complete submissions should be sent to [email protected] with the subject "Interim VPAP".

Yours,

Gregg Camfield, Ph.D.
Executive Vice Chancellor and Provost
