The United Macedonian Diaspora (UMD) can officially confirm that the local Greek Court in the Lerin area has dropped the lawsuit against the Center for the Macedonian Language.
According to Stilianos Samartzis, who shared the news on social media, "it was a pleasant surprise from the Greek legal system."
He stated, "In the future, we are waiting for the opening of private Macedonian schools and for the Macedonian language to be part of the educational system in Aegean Macedonia so the new generations can learn the Macedonian language. We thank the Greek judicial system for this fair decision."
UMD cautiously applauds this court decision. The fight for our equality and human rights in so-called democracies like Greece is far from over. We must continue to educate the world about the effects and impact on Macedonians as a result of the division of geographic Macedonia in 1913 by the Western Powers.
UMD has regularly kept U.S., Australian, Canadian, and European government officials up to speed on this case as well as the ongoing discrimination of Macedonians in Aegean Macedonia and throughout Greece, including the recent attack on Archimandrite Nikodim Tsarknias. For two years in a row, UMD Australia has been funding Macedonian language classes in Aegean Macedonia.
UMD is committed to our Macedonian human rights cause and will be announcing several initiatives over the next few months to help support Macedonians in Albania, Bulgaria, and Greece.
