Pantomime from Le Devin du Village, period reconstruction including dancing en pointe.

This week's Video is the beginning of the Pantomime from Le Devin du Village by Jean Jacques Rousseau, 1752 as performed by Catherine Turocy and Thomas Baird in 1989 at Florence Gould Hall with The New York Baroque Dance Company and Concert Royal. FIAF was a co-sponsor/producer. Costumes by Marie Anne Chiment and set by Scott Blake. Full credits can be found in this review: New York Magazine Review

After our New York performance the opera was repeated at The Boston Early Music Festival.

If you look closely at Turocy's solo you will see the first time she employed standing on the tips of her toes in her period choreography for the Enlightenment. After reading Gennaro Magri's dance treatise and studying the ballets of Auguste Ferrere, Turocy worked with Baird to refine her interpretation of the step vocabulary and choreography. Their partnership deepened and "It was a delight to dance with Tom as he perfected his role of the roving nobleman hoping to find some fun with the villagers." Turocy

Thank you Caroline Copeland for offering your Baroque dance classes for free. We appreciate your artistry and dedication to the community and especially to The New York Baroque Dance Company. The class is offered free but donations to the Dancer Fund are appreciated. Caroline wanted to honor the reality that many freelance dancers and company dancers are out of work and cannot afford to pay for class. At the same time, she wanted to find her own way of raising money for the NYBDC whose performances from March through the summer have been postponed, cancelled or are in limbo. Her answer was to create an inspiring Zoom class which now has over 300 members with as many asy 76 students showing up for class.

Join our free Zoom Class class on Wednesdays from 11-12. Simply reply to this email with the word, Zoom, and I will put you on our list and Caroline will be in touch with you. The class is free but donations to our Dancer Fund are appreciated.
