The
Canaan Fir makes a beautiful Christmas tree. Andre has flocked this
one
for his "snow tree". |
Canaan
Fir
(Abies balsamea
var. phanerolepis)
Canaan Firs are beautiful evergreen trees that are closely
related to the Balsam Fir. Their popularity as a cut Christmas tree
has grown over the years because it is one of the longest
lasting cut trees, remaining fresh from Thanksgiving
through New Years! The shape of the Canaan Fir is beautiful, it has
strong branches for hanging ornaments, an exceptional fragrance,
and excellent needle retention.
|
Canaan
Fir has short,
soft, fragrant needles. |
Soft and Fragrant
Canaan Fir has short, soft needles that are a lustrous dark green
on the upper surface and a lovely silvery blue on the underside.
Some of these fir trees even have a beautiful bluish tint to the
needles. The wonderful fragrance of the Canaan Fir rivals that of
its cousin the Balsam Fir and it will fill the house with the
delightful "scent of Christmas".
History of Canaan Fir
The Canaan Fir is considered to be a variety of Balsam Fir. During
the Pleistocene glaciation, it is thought that many of the northern
conifer species, including the Balsam Fir, migrated south along the
Appalachian Mountain range until there was a continuous fir
population from Canada south to North Carolina. As the climate
warmed, the Balsam Fir retreated to the north and southern species
replaced the fir trees at lower elevations in the south. However,
isolated pockets of firs remained at higher elevations in the
mountains of North Carolina, Virginia, and West Virginia. These
firs, now considered varieties of Balsam Fir, are Fraser Fir
( Abies balsamea var. fraseri) found in the
mountains of North Carolina and Virginia and Canaan Fir native to
the higher elevations of West Virginia and Virginia.

Andre
talks with Greg Tolbert, owner of Fragrant Firs about flocking a
Christmas tree. |
Cut Your Own - Fresh!
Fir trees have long been a favorite for cut Christmas trees; Balsam
Fir, Douglas Fir, Noble Fir, Fraser Fir, and now Canaan Fir. I
prefer them for their soft needles, strong branches, and wonderful
fragrance. But I like to cut my own and it was difficult to find a
place in the Shenandoah Valley that grew fir trees. "We're too low
here", Andre said, "fir trees don't grow well in the Valley."
Well apparently Canaan Firs will grow fine at our elevation!
Right around the corner from Viette's in Fishersville, Greg
Tolbert has been growing them on his farm (suitably named Fragrant Firs) since the spring
of 1999 and they are BEAUTIFUL! Greg has taken Andre's advice to
heart and does not over-shear his trees so that they have a
beautiful natural shape with plenty of room to hang ornaments and
lights. Andre has gotten both of his trees here this year and I
think they are the prettiest he's had in a while. As far as I'm
concerned, the perfect Christmas tree can be found
right here in the Valley after all!
Visit Greg and his family at Fragrant Firs (off Sangers Lane in
Fishersville) and choose a beautiful, FRESH, long-lasting Canaan
Fir for your Christmas tree.
Visit their website for information, hours, and
directions to the farm.

Tip of the Month |
Choose the Best Christmas Tree!
... and keep it that way!
For many families, the selection of a
Christmas tree is a "deep-rooted" Christmas tradition that often
marks the beginning of the holiday season. At our house, searching
for the perfect tree is quite an event and every year we reminisce
over our previous tree hunting adventures! It is a wonderful family
tradition!
Types of Christmas
Trees
There are many different species of trees that are commonly
used for Christmas trees. My personal favorites are the
soft-needled firs. These trees are long-lasting
with great needle retention and add a wonderful fragrance to your
home for the holidays! They have strong branches and, as long as
they haven't been over-sheared, are open enough to hang lots of
ornaments. The pines, especially White pine and
Scotch pine, are also very popular. These are long-lasting but are
sometimes hard to decorate because they tend to be very full -
especially if they've been over-sheared. Spruce
trees make lovely Christmas trees, particularly the Blue
spruce, if you can get past the very prickly needles! Andr often
chooses a beautiful Blue spruce for his snow tree which he flocks
and decorates with colorful balls and other ornaments. Click for
information on the attributes of some commonly used cut
Christmas trees.
Choosing a Good
One
There are many places you can get Christmas trees, from
retail lots to choose-and-cut farms. When you go to a tree farm and
cut your own, you know it's fresh and it's fun to wander through
the growing trees to find the most perfect one! If you choose a cut
tree from a retail lot, make sure it is fresh. The tree should have
a healthy green color and the needles should be flexible and not
come off when you stroke a branch. A good way to check for
freshness is to lift a cut tree off the ground a few inches and
then let it drop on it's cut end. A few inner needles might fall
but green outer needles should not drop off the tree.

tip on choosing a fresh tree.
Once You Get It
Home
Once you get home with your tree:
- Make
a fresh cut about an inch above the original cut.
- Place your tree in the stand and fill the reservoir.
- Before bringing your tree indoors consider spraying it with
Andre's special Christmas tree spray or Bonide Wilt Stop to help
keep it fresh and less likely to dry out.
- Keep
the reservoir full of water at all times! It will take up a
lot of water so be sure to check it several times a day.
- Always keep your tree away from heat sources.
- If you don't put your tree up right away, re-cut the end, put
it in a bucket of water, and keep it in a cool, shaded place until
you are ready to bring it inside.
- Try Andre's special Christmas tree stand formula and his Christmas tree and greens spray to help
fireproof your tree and greens and keep them fresh.
