Dear Mount Pleasant residents and business owners,

Summer has arrived in Mount Pleasant, and with it comes a multitude of special events, youth programs, and family activities. There is something for everyone to enjoy around town this summer, and I hope you take advantage of every opportunity to relax and have fun.  
 
This month's E-brief is full of information about summer events, public improvement projects, and the recently approved Annual Budget. I am pleased to announce that the new budget of $99,990,440 demonstrates cost containment at every level and yet also dedicates funding towards critical infrastructure and improvement projects throughout the community. The budget year begins July 1, 2016.

Shem Creek Fisheries Saturday Fish Market

Shem Creek Fisheries has recently launched a Saturday Fish Market at the Farmers Market Pavilion on Coleman Boulevard. Purchase fresh and local seafood from Shem Creek based fishermen from 8 - 12 PM every Saturday.

MP Farmers Market Is Now Open
The Mount Pleasant Farmers Market is where our community meets to share in a vibrant array of locally grown and SC Certified produce and flowers. Stroll through the market to find a bounty of just-picked vegetables and fruits, stunning and fragrant flowers and local seafood plus fresh-cooked meals, baked and canned goods and locally produced snacks. Join us every Tuesday from April through September starting at 3:30 p.m. to mingle with neighbors and visitors alike while enjoying live music and family-friendly activities. Free parking.

SC Hwy 41 Widening
Widening SC Highway 41 is the top legislative priority for the Town of Mount Pleasant. SC-41 is a State-owned two-lane, undivided arterial route and designated hurricane evacuation route.

New Online Sign-Up To Speak at Town Council Meetings
As part of the Town's ongoing efforts to increase public participation, a new online sign-up is available for those wishing to speak at the upcoming Town Council meeting. Citizens may also sign up to speak in person immediately before the Council meeting begins. For more information, please contact the Communications Office.

Some Town Offices Have Moved!  
Please note that the Fire Administration staff and Fire Marshal's Office are temporarily located beside Fire Station 2 on Egypt Road. T he Public Services Department, Building License Division and the Planning Department have temporarily moved to Six Mile Fleet Maintenance Facility on Sweetgrass Parkway, Pinckney Place. For more information about Town office and staff relocation visit the Relocation Webpage.
2016 Summer Splash Bash
Time to celebrate the summer vacation!  Gather all your friends and come on over!

The pool will be open for free swim so be sure to wear your swim suit!  Lots of other fun FREE activities will ring in the start of summer!

Annual Budget Approved
Town Council gave final reading to the proposed FY 2017 Annual Operating Budget at their May 10th Council meeting.
SCDOT Drainage Improvement Work Scheduled for Long Point Road
The South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT) will begin drainage improvements on Long Point Road between Needle Rush Parkway and Whipple Road to address flooding and erosion issues starting June 6. As part of the drainage project, SCDOT will remove five trees in order to establish a swale directing the water toward Boone Hall Creek and Whipple Road. Work will be performed between the hours of 9 a.m. and 2 p.m., June 6-10 and again June 13 - 17.

Community Roundtable Meetings
Community Roundtable Meeting with White Hall Terrace residents on Feb. 24, 2016
 
Town officials and staff are continuing to host informal roundtable meetings with community organizations, civic groups, and neighborhood associations. This small group format allows for more in-depth discussion in an informal setting. It also provides citizens with another opportunity to give their input and receive a response beyond public hearings and Town Council meetings.

Coffee with the Mayor

Last month's Coffee with the Mayor took place at Eggs Up Grill where Mayor Linda Page met with residents to exchange information and discover ways to work together to improve Mount Pleasant.

The next Coffee with the Mayor will be held on  June 13, 2016 at  Saveurs Du Monde Cafe located at 536 Belle Station Blvd. from 7:30 - 8:30 AM.The event is free and open to all! Please contact the Government Outreach Office at (843) 884 - 8517 for more information.

Town Administrator's Mobile Office Hours
 

The next monthly  Mobile Office Hours event will take place on  July 26, 2016 Additional details will be forthcoming. Each month, the Town Administrator holds open office hours at various locations around the community. All citizens are invited to stop by and discuss items of interest to them.  No appointment necessary. Pond Management
Do you own or manage a pond?  Do you understand how your pond functions?  Do you want to know more?  Our Clemson education partner is offering a course in pond management.  This course has two options; one for professionals with pesticides licenses - and one for everyone else!  View course information.

Wired For Business: Local Tech Companies Announce Nearly $9M in Capital Investments

Mount Pleasant's economy continues to stay dynamic.  Over the last month, two technology companies have announced major capital investments of nearly $9 million dollars combined - Zubie with $6 million and STEM Premier with $2.6 million.  Additionally, we released two new stories through our Wired for Business program with a combined national headline impression count of over 200,000. Sweetgrass Cultural Arts Festival
You won't want to miss the 2016 Sweetgrass Festival on Saturday, June 4th!  Now in it's eleventh year, the Festival has become a must-do event.

We also invite you to attend the Gullah Geechee Seminar that morning, hosted by the East Cooper Civic Club, with roundtable discussions of issues that impact the communities along the Gullah Geechee Culture Heritage Corridor.  The seminar will be held from 10 until 2 on Saturday, June 4, in the Cooper River Room at Mount Pleasant's Waterfront Park.
