Tazzarin North to Nunatsiavut

Views of the Day

1745, Saturday, July 22, 2023

I am writing early and briefly. Charlie and I are in the midst of making a very long day's run of over 70 miles. I don't think we will be anchored until near my bed time. At least it stays light very late.

All day we have been sailing, or motoring in varied conditions if sun, light showers, cloud, winds and calms. What makes me happy is that all day we have been in Nunatsiavut, the Inuit lands of Labrador. The logo at the top of this email contains the title of this sailing expedition, "Tazzarin: North to Nunatsiavut." We are in the region that I wanted to reach! Over the days ahead we will visit some Inuit communities.

I continue to pay careful attention to Navigation. These waters are not charted as accurately or completely as we are accustomed to back home. Sometimes the digital charts are off. Last night the little cove we were in was off by a few hundred feet. This morning we sailed by a ledge with water breaking over it that was not on the chart. Some areas of both the paper and digital charts have no soundings at all; in those places one moves very cautiously.

So, as for today's photos, they are simply a few views from today that I like. One of me is above. Another is of Charlie. Another of a berg. Then a view of Cape Harrison that we rounded a few hours ago and one of the Ragged Islands.

Tonight we plan to be in a cove on Kikkertavak Island. More tomorrow when we plan to reach Makkovik. You will notice the place names from Inuktitut, the language of the Inuit.
