Viking Society Newsletter

April 2021

hello spring.jpg

Dear Friends of AWHS!

Happy Spring! Now more than ever, we want to wish you health and happiness in this new season and prosperity in the coming days.

We had hoped that we could continue as usual with our annual Spring events this year for our Viking Community, but due to the limitations still in place, we unfortunately must continue to postpone many of them. That being said, we are working diligently to reschedule what we can and keep you up to speed with all of those updates!

If you are new to this newsletter, WELCOME! The AWHS Development Department sends out a monthly e-newsletter on the first Thursday of every month to keep you in the know! If you are not on the mailing list and would like to subscribe to this monthly e-newsletter, please email so that we may add you to the list. *Please note your email address is used strictly for this purpose, your information is kept private and is never distributed.

God's Blessings,

The Development Department at Archbishop Wood High School

The Louise Ciabarra College and Career Counseling Center at Archbishop Wood High School is an open concept space that warmly welcomes students, parents, college representatives, and more! The objective of the center is to provide college & career readiness while also demystifying the steps needed in the process.
Take a moment to watch the feature video highlighting this center, the guidance and counseling staff and how AWHS serves our Viking Community for their next steps after high school!
Funding for this center was provided in part by The Ciabarra Family and donors like you, thank you!

*A large portion of this production was filmed prior to Covid-19.

All follow up footage was taken with health and safety protocol in place.

Week of Giving 2021 Art.jpg

Thanks to YOU, our alumni, benefactors, families and friends, Wood had the resources to continue to provide an excellent Catholic education during the pandemic. Due to the unfortunate cancellation of a majority of AWHS Spring Scholarship Fundraisers, our students and families need your help now more than ever! Please consider making a gift to The Viking Fund or Wood’s Scholarship Program.

The Viking Fund benefits every student. It is crucial. The fund supports all school programs, activities and unforeseen expenses. It is the Viking Fund that helped provide additional cameras in the classroom so that students could continue their education on virtual days and stay connected to their teachers and classmates.

The Scholarship Program awards more than $400,000 annually to current and incoming students. Currently, more than 40% of Wood's families and their students qualify for financial aid. As more families face financial challenges due to the pandemic, the need for tuition assistance will increase for the 2021-2022 school year.

Please CLICK HERE to support Archbishop Wood’s students and families during our Week of Giving, May 2nd - May 8th 2021.

Vikings in the Spotlight!

AWHS Piano Lab

piano lab.jpg

Did you know AWHS has a piano lab?!

Seen here is Sr. Joanne's Piano Class using the lab! If you walked in the room, you wouldn't be able to hear anything, but this is for a good reason! Students wear headphones that are plugged into their pianos so that they can focus on just their sound as they fine tune their playing skills.

Sr. Joanne is able to "pop-in" to specific pianos with the help of her control station. The "pop-in" method works as a wonderful tool for the teacher to listen and speak to each student individually. Sr. Joanne can serve as a guide if/when a student gets stuck and/or when the students must demonstrate what they've learned.

Coronam Fidelitas Merebit Awards

In mid March, AWHS hosted a juice and donuts breakfast for our students and parents to honor their receiving of the Coronam Fidelitas Merebit Award.

This award is given at the end of each semester and it designates a student working to their fullest God given potential.

We could not be more proud of our Vikings for pushing themselves to be their best self and their parents for raising such strong and determined individuals!

Way to go Vikings!

AP Environmental Science

In AP Environmental Science, students are studying air and water pollution. They tested tap water, Neshaminy Creek water, and snowmelt from their own backyards for pH, phosphate, and ammonia. While all these samples showed normal or close-to-normal values for phosphate and ammonia, several snow samples had acidic pH, they decided to study if natural lakes and streams have ways of buffering the effect of acid precipitation.

They then created mini-lakes with beds of limestone, sand, gravel, or marble. After adding distilled water and letting them sit overnight, the students performed an acid titration to determine how much acid could be added without altering the pH of each lake. Some lakes, like the one with the limestone bed, handled close to 300 drops of acid before the pH increased.

Forensic Science

In Forensic Science students spent the last week studying over 30 types of drugs (everything from heroin to caffeine to nicotine to adderall) for their unit on Forensic Toxicology.

They will create infomercials to share with their peers in the hopes that they can teach them about the effects of drug addiction.

The students also performed a drug analysis lab - just like the experts do - to identify various unknown toxins, such as aspirin, acetaminophen, simulated cocaine and LSD, mercury, and lead.

2021 All Catholic Chorus Concert

all catholic chorus.jpg

Eighty-four students representing Archdiocesan Secondary Schools and private Catholic high schools throughout the five-county region were selected to participate in the Archdiocese of Philadelphia’s 2021 All Catholic Chorus Concert on Saturday, March 20, 2021 this includes Archbishop Wood High School!!!

Archbishop Wood will be represented by the following students:

Erin Kafel

Shauna Boyle

We are very proud of their accomplishments!

Chemistry: Paper Chromatography

Jaden Burlingame, John Mele, Sean Helverson and Alissa Sabatino use various chemical tools to investigate chemical reaction rates by dissolving sodium bicarbonate tablets into water. This liberates carbon dioxide gas which we captured in a balloon.

Students observed the change in reaction rates after they heated up the water and after they ground the tablets into a fine powder.
