May 2021

Dear Vikings,

We are excited to recap the success of AWHS's Week of Giving 2021 and share all of the other things happening here on campus at Archbishop Wood High School.

Thank you to everyone who made a gift to WOG 2021! Thank you to those who helped us spread the word! And lastly, thank you to those who attended and/or sponsored the AWHS Alumni Golf Classic last Friday! Your participation in Wood's fundraisers MAKES ALL THE DIFFERENCE each and every passing year. Without YOU, the future of AWHS would look much different!

Take a look through this newsletter to see just how much of an impact your gift makes towards our students and their families!

God's Blessings,

AWHS Week of Giving 2021 Recap

The future sustainability of Archbishop Wood High School depends on the generosity of our Viking Community. With tuition now costing almost $10,000 per year, families in need of financial aid has increased from 35% to 42%.

Thanks to YOU; during our week of giving, we were able to raise more than $9,000.00. The money raised will directly benefit our students and families in need of tuition assistance and campus/program upgrades.

Thank you to everyone who made a gift and/or helped spread the word for our Week of Giving 2021. Your participation makes a difference! THANK YOU!

30th Annual Alumni Golf Classic

On Friday, May 7th, AWHS hosted the 30th Annual Alumni Golf Classic! Our Vikings were blessed with beautiful weather for a fun day of golf all to support our current and future Archbishop Wood families!

AWHS wishes to give a huge THANK YOU to Ed Connolly (Class of 1993) for his hard work and partnership with the AWHS Development Office in helping put together this wonderful event! Also, thank you to everyone who participated as a golfer and/or a sponsor/donor. Your investment directly contributes to the ongoing crusade of protecting and sustaining the future of Catholic Education.

We are blessed to have a community of Vikings who show up for their Alma Mater, especially as our fundraising needs grow with each passing year.

AWHS Class of 2021

We bumped into Mrs. Kasperski and our Student Council last week as they were busy decking the halls of Archbishop Wood! The reason behind their decorating is in anticipation and celebration of our soon to be Class of 2021 graduates! Can you believe graduation is only 25 days away?! Time flies when you're a Viking!

EXTRA! EXTRA!

The student produced May 2021 Issue of the "Viking Voice" Newspaper has hit the press!

The Viking Voice is a publication of Mr. William Devlin's Journalism Class. The students learn how to conduct interviews, write and edit news copy, take photographs and compose captions. They also participate in designing the pages for the issues.

Over the course of the 2020-2021 school year, the students have produced issues as part of the course requirements.

Thermodynamic Chemistry

Tyair Sanders and Jason Greer, seen here in 4th period Chemistry class, measure the enthalpy of change during Exothermic and Endothermic chemical reactions

Enthalpy is the term used to measure the change in heat in the reaction solution. The students took temperature assessments of each reaction to measure the heat change and recorded the heat change every minute.

Double Replacement Reactions

Students in Dr. Halloran's Chemistry Class investigate double replacement chemical reactions. The students made up two clear solutions and added both solutions at the same time to a larger beaker.

During experimentation, one of the students made a suspension of lead chloride white precipitate. In another experiment, two of the students made a yellow paint colloid. The yellow paint colloid is the same formula used to make paint during colonial American times. Just think! George Washington used this chemical reaction to make yellow paint for his estate on Mount Vernon. Science is cool!

Algebra 2 (Honors Level)

Mrs Morton's (Honors Level) Algebra 2 students completed a Pixel Art project on solving Polynomial Equations. Virtual and in school students worked on solving polynomials to reveal a picture when all problems were solved correctly.
