Village Board Holds First Meeting of Year on Jan. 12
The Wilmette Village Board will meet remotely on Tuesday, Jan. 12 at 7:30 p.m. Agenda highlights include appointments to the Housing Commission. This volunteer committee makes recommendations regarding affordable housing in the village, including housing alternatives and housing requirements. Read President Bob Bielinski’s memo with his recommended appointees.

Also on the agenda, the approval of engineering design services for the Neighborhood Storage Project (NSP) Phase 3, which includes a 14 acre-feet StormTrap vault under Thornwood Park and over 8,700 feet of storm sewers.

This is the final phase of this multi-year project and the Village’s largest infrastructure investment ever. Upon completion in January 2023, 98% of properties west of Ridge Road that are currently impacted by flooding will experience flood relief. COVID-19 Update and Vaccination Resources
While the COVID-19 vaccine brings hope for 2021, we are still very much in a pandemic and COVID-19 cases continue to climb in Illinois.

Wilmette, let’s not let our guard down. We must continue to be vigilant and continue to do your part to protect yourself, your family and our community. Practice the 3 W’s: Wear a mask, wash your hands and watch your distance. Avoid social gatherings and get tested if you think you have been exposed.

The Cook County Department of Public Health (CCDPH) is responsible for coordinating the COVID-19 vaccination rollout in our area. The CCDPH is using a phased approach based on national and state guidance. Vaccinations are currently being administered to health care workers, residents and staff at long-term care facilities and other health care workers, including EMS personnel. The Village is in close communication with County officials about the vaccination distribution plan and will continue to update the community with new information.

Residents can sign up to receive information from the CCDPH about the vaccine distribution plan. This form does not register individuals to receive the vaccination, only to receive regular updates about the availability and distribution of the vaccination.

Holiday Decoration Disposal and Recycling Reminders
If you’ve held off on taking down your Christmas Tree and holiday decorations until this weekend, please remember these guidelines for proper disposal – including how to recycle.

Compost Your Christmas Tree
Advanced Disposal will continue to collect Christmas trees for composting next week. Please place your trees at the location of your regular recycling pickup. Residents with alley access should place trees in the alley. Only residents without alley access should place trees at the curb for collection. Trees must be free of any string lights, ornaments, tinsel, garland and plastic/fabric bag wrap.

Note: Garland, live greens and wreaths should be disposed of through the regular solid waste program.

Recycle Decorations
Place these items in your recycling toter for weekly collection: paper gift wrap, cardboard boxes, cardboard rolls and paper greeting cards.

Holiday string lights can be recycled at Wilmette Public Works facility, 711 Laramie Ave. The recycling boxes are located in the visitor’s parking lot and accessible 24-hours a day through Jan. 31. Please remove lights from packaging and plastic bags.

If you have electronics to recycle, you can also bring them to the Public Works facility. Look for the big dumpster in the south driveway.

If you are unsure if an item can be recycled through the curbside program, check acceptable items.

Dispose of Decorations
The following items cannot be recycled in your toter and should be disposed of with your refuse: plastic or foil gift wrap, tissue paper, plastic bags, plastic cards, rope or plastic handle gift bags, tree strands, Styrofoam peanuts, packing material, glitter, ribbons, bows and string.

Visit our website for more information on recycling and disposing of holiday items.

January is National Radon Action Month – Take Steps to Protect Your Health
You can’t see, smell or taste radon, but it could be present at a dangerous level in your home. According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), one out of 15 homes have high radon levels. Radon is the leading cause of lung cancer deaths among nonsmokers in America and claims the lives of about 21,000 Americans each year.

The EPA has designated January as National Radon Action Month. The EPA recommends that all homes in the U.S. be tested annually for radon. You can purchase a radon test kit online or in home improvement stores. Testing is easy and inexpensive. If a high radon level is detected in your home, you can take steps to fix the problem to protect yourself and your family.
