COVID-19 Update: New Cases Top 3,000 in Illinois

The Illinois Department of Public Health reported 3,059 new COVID-19 cases in the state yesterday, the first time the new daily case count has been above 3,000 since May. Region 10, which includes Wilmette, has held a steady test positivity rate of about 5% over the past 10 days, below the 8% threshold that would trigger additional restrictions. Suburban Cook County overall continues to experience stable COVID-19 conditions.

As weather gets cooler and activities move inside, remember that factors that increase the risk of COVID-19 transmission are indoor spaces, crowded spaces and not wearing masks. Our community is counting on each other to make wise choices and stop the spread!

Youth and Adult Sports Safety Guidelines
Under Phase 4 of the State's reopening plan, kids and adults may participate in certain sports with safety precautions in place. The Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) divides sports into low, medium and high risk categories. Generally, sports that involve individual play and less physical contact are considered lower risk. For example, golf, swimming and baseball are low risk while football, hockey and wrestling are high risk. Check out Phase 4 sports guidelines here

The IDPH also divides the level of play into the following categories. Under current conditions, low risk sports can play at levels 1, 2 and 3, medium risk sports can play at levels 1 and 2 and high risk sports can play at level 1.
  • Level 1: No-contact practices, and trainings only
  • Level 2: Intra-team scrimmages allowed, with parental consent for minors; no competitive play
  • Level 3: Intra-conference or Intra-EMS-region or intra-league play/meets only; state- or league-championship game/meet allowed for low-risk sports only
  • Level 4: Tournaments, out-of-conference/league play, out-of-state play allowed; championship games allowed

COVID-19 in Wilmette:
  • As of Oct. 9, Wilmette's seven-day rolling average of confirmed daily cases is at 1.6 new cases per day. To date, Wilmette has had 339 confirmed COVID-19 cases, with 11 new cases reported in the last week.
  • The Village's seven-day rolling average for test positivity (percentage of those tested who test positive for COVID-19) is at 1.9 percent.
  • Overall, there have been 9,354 tests for Wilmette, with 573 new tests in the last week.

Wilmette Cannabis Referendum: Your Questions Answered

Wilmette voters will see a ballot question asking whether the Village should allow the retail sale of cannabis within Wilmette. This non-binding referendum is intended to gauge public opinion for future Village Board policy discussions. The referendum reads:

"Shall the retail sale of adult use recreational cannabis be permitted within the Village of Wilmette at a business licensed by the State of Illinois?"

You've got questions, we've got answers!

Q: How do I vote?
A: The question will appear on the 2020 General Election Ballot. You can still register online through Oct. 18.

Q: What does a "Yes" or "No" vote mean?
A: "Yes" vote will indicate that you are in favor of the retail sales of adult use recreational cannabis within Wilmette. A "No" vote will indicate that you are not in favor. Since this is an advisory (non-binding) referendum, the results will be used as a gauge for public opinion. The Village Board will make the final decision whether adult-use recreational cannabis sales will be permitted within the Village.

Q: What happens after the referendum?
A: There will be an opportunity after the referendum for the public to provide input to the Village Board. This includes input on an ordinance prohibiting or allowing the sale of adult-use recreational cannabis, determining what uses would be allowed (e.g. dispensary vs. cultivation), zoning regulations and locations.

Visit the Village's dedicated cannabis referendum webpage for more resources and FAQs.
