Go Easy on the Salt this Winter
Go easy on the salt! Over-salting sidewalks is harmful to the environment. Keep the Five S’s from the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District in mind:

  1. Shovel first – only use salt as needed for safety.
  2. Size matters – a coffee cup of salt should be enough for a 20’ driveway or 10 sidewalk squares.
  3. Spread – distribute salt evenly.
  4. Sweep up extra salt to keep it out of waterways.
  5. Switch to sand for traction in temperatures lower than 15 degrees.
