COVID-19 Update: Keep Doing Your Part to Help Beat this Virus

Thanks for doing your part, Wilmette, to help prevent the spread of COVID-19. While cases continue to trend slightly upward, our overall region (Suburban Cook County, Region 10) is holding steady over the last few weeks and remains below the 8% threshold that triggers additional restrictions. Wilmette's positivity rate is also below the Suburban Cook County levels.

As some parts of Illinois see COVID-19 resurgences, the State is imposing new restrictions in those regions along with new statewide rules. Under new State guidelines announced earlier this week, all patrons are required to wear a mask while interacting with wait staff and employees at bars and restaurants when food and beverages are brought to the table and when picking up carry-out orders and at drive-thru windows.

Our local businesses are the heart of Wilmette and they're counting on us to wear our masks - not only to stay healthy but also to avoid fines and additional restrictions. By wearing a mask (the right way over your mouth and nose), we can keep Wilmette businesses open and beat this virus! Show your love for Wilmette businesses by snapping a picture and tagging the business and using the hashtags #MaskOnWilmette and #Wilmetteonomics.

Final Weekend of Tableside Tunes in Downtown Wilmette

Matt Davis
The last live music performances for outdoor diners in downtown Wilmette are coming up this weekend from 6 to 8 p.m. Thank you to all the musicians who have performed this summer, and to our community for following health and safety measures and making tableside tunes a success! Here's this weekend's lineup:

Friday, Aug. 28: Multi-instrumentalist and singer Matthew Davis will perform an eclectic mix of classic and contemporary Motown, soul, jazz and Caribbean sounds.

Lonesome Rodeo
Saturday, Aug. 29: Lonesome Rodeo (Wilmette's Chris Karabas and fiddle player Emma Smoler) will bring their heartland style to downtown diners.

Musicians will play near the corner of Wilmette and Central avenues. Please use outdoor seating at Village Hall and Veteran's Park. Thank you for not gathering, as this is not a concert but ambient background music, and Phase 4 health and safety guidelines will be enforced.

Protect Your Credit Score and Identity from COVID-19 Scams

Fraud and identity theft are becoming more prevalent as scammers take advantage of the COVID-19 crisis. Here are some steps you can take to protect your credit score and your identity:
  • Run Your Credit Weekly (for free): Reviewing your credit report helps you catch signs of identity theft early. Equifax, Experian and TransUnion are now offering free weekly online reports through April 2021. Learn more.
  • Place a Fraud Alert on Your Credit: The alert notifies creditors to take extra steps to verify your identity before extending any credit. Learn how to place an alert.
  • Freeze Your Credit: No one can run your credit or see it until you lift the freeze. Learn how to freeze your credit.
  • Report Fraud: If you have been a victim of COVID-19 fraud, you can file a report here. For unemployment insurance fraud, file a report with the Illinois Department of Unemployment Insurance here.
Green Tip: Avoid Invasive Species

If you've been spending a lot of time in your yard this summer, you may be thinking about adding some trees, shrubs and other plants. Be aware that some popular varieties of shrubs, trees and perennial plants are actually invasive, meaning that they can take over a landscape and even spread to nearby forests where they crowd out native plants. Buckthorn, burning bush, Norway maple and tree of heaven are examples of invasive species that you should not plant in our area. Consider removing them if you have some on your property.
