COVID-19 Update: Suburban Cook County at 'Warning Level' - Please Do Your Part to Reduce Risk

Suburban Cook County (Region 10) is at COVID-19 "Warning Level" for increased risk of COVID-19 transmission, according to the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH). The State's "warning" designation is triggered when there is an increase in risk indicators. Cook County had an increase in two of the eight metrics IDPH monitors, including increased new cases and increased COVID-19 deaths.

Wilmette's positivity rate remains significantly below the Suburban Cook County levels so please continue to do your part and keep Wilmette trending in the right direction!

As of Sept. 3, Wilmette's seven-day rolling average of confirmed daily cases is at 2.6 new cases per day. To date, Wilmette has had 270 confirmed COVID-19 cases, with 18 new cases reported in the last week.

The Village's seven-day rolling average for test positivity (percentage of those tested who test positive for COVID-19) is at 4.4 percent. The Region 10 test positivity rate stands at 6.9 percent, this is the metric used to determine if additional mitigation measures will be implemented by the State. Overall, there have been 6,860 tests for Wilmette, with 409 new tests in the last week.

You can view IDPH Restore Illinois indicators for Region 10, which includes Wilmette, as well as the criteria that could cause our region to become more restrictive.
Physical distancing, mask-wearing and frequent hand washing are the most effective measures to help stop the spread and reduce risk.

#MaskUp Cook County

Cook County Government and the Cook County Department of Public Health have launched a campaign encouraging people to #MASKUP, so we don't have to close up. Learn more.

Let's All Do Our Part to Make This School Year Safe and Successful

As Wilmette students head back to the classroom, let's all do our part to make sure we keep our kids safe
  • Drivers: Look out for children crossing the streets, keep off your phone even at the pickup/drop-off line and always obey school zone speed limits.
  • Students: Use sidewalks and crosswalks, look both ways before you cross and look where you're walking - not at your phone!
  • Everyone: Wear your mask, watch your distance and wash your hands often.

Regional Communities Recreational Cannabis Business Policy
Cannabis Referendum Resources

Wilmette voters will be asked whether the Village should allow the retail sale of cannabis within the Village. This non-binding referendum on the November ballot is intended to gauge public opinion for future Village Board policy discussions. As you consider how to vote, please visit our online resource page for information on cannabis business policies in surrounding communities and cannabis referendum outcomes in Chicagoland communities. Other resources include State regulations, FAQs and past Village discussions on the topic.

The referendum language will read:

"Shall the retail sale of adult use recreational cannabis be permitted within the Village of Wilmette at a business licensed by the State of Illinois?"
Mark Your Calendar! Document Destruction Event Sept. 26

The Village and the Solid Waste Agency of Northern Cook County (SWANCC) will host a one-day Document Destruction Event on Saturday, Sept. 26 from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. The event will be held in the southwest parking lot of the Centennial Park & Recreation Complex (2300 Old Glenview Road). All Wilmette and SWANCC community residents are welcome (bring your ID or proof of residence).
Hurry! Cooperative Tree Planting Application Due Sept. 11

It's time to apply for a parkway tree through the Village's Cooperative Tree Planting Program! Supplies are extremely limited and the deadline is coming up on Sept. 11. This program allows residents to select a tree from a list of several species with the option to upgrade to a larger size. Participation in the shared-cost Cooperative Tree Planting Program allows the Village to maximize the number of trees planted annually, which helps keep our community green!

Auto Historica XVI Remixed Vintage Car Parade on Sept. 13

To allow for social distancing this year, the Museum has organized a vintage car parade around Wilmette on Sunday, Sept. 13 beginning at 1:30 p.m. The parade will start at 4th Street and Linden Avenue, wind its way through parts of east and west Wilmette, and end at the Museum, where the cars will be parked for a short time for viewers to get a closer, social distanced look. The route will be posted on wilmettehistory.org next week. Please enjoy the parade at a safe distance from others and while wearing a mask.
Community Playfield Public Meeting

Central Avenue Detour Extended from Sheridan Road to Green Bay Road

The Central Avenue detour has been extended through the downtown, so all traffic from Sheridan Road to Green Bay Road is now one-way in the westbound direction. The detour, which will be in place until December, is necessary so the Village's contractor can complete work associated with the Central Avenue Reconstruction and Downtown Streetscape Project. A detour route will be posted directing motorists to use Lake Avenue and Wilmette Avenue.

Downtown businesses are open during construction. Parking is available on the south side of Central Avenue and all public parking lots are open.

For more information on the project visit wilmettestreetscape.com. To sign up for weekly updates, please visit the Village's website and choose 'Central Avenue Project Updates'.

Questions about this work can be directed to Lisa Brock at (847) 323-3602 or [email protected].
Village Construction Projects
The Neighborhood Storage Project is the Village's largest ever infrastructure investment and will bring flooding relief to thousands of Wilmette residents while improving access and safety for our entire community. Visit the project website for construction updates
  • Phase 1A: Storm sewer and watermain improvements
  • Phase 2: Hibbard Park stormwater storage vault
Traffic Impacts:
  • Lake Avenue eastbound and westbound right lanes are closed from just west of Skokie Boulevard to Hibbard Road. The westbound right lane will be open at the end of each day.
The Central Avenue Reconstruction and Downtown Streetscape Project will enhance lighting, sidewalks, roadways, plantings and amenities on Wilmette and Central avenues within downtown. Visit the project website for more information.
Traffic Impacts:
  • Central Avenue is closed to eastbound traffic between Sheridan Road and Green Bay Road. Please follow the detour and allow extra time for travel.
  • The construction team and School District 39 staff have been meeting to coordinate smooth access on the first day of school (Sept. 8). There will be no construction within school zones during drop-off and pickup times.
  • Downtown parking on Central Avenue now accommodates vehicles traveling westbound; parking on the north side of Central Avenue will be temporarily unavailable.
Every year the Village completes road, sidewalk and alley repairs, brick street maintenance, sewer lining and many other infrastructure improvements. View project timelines and completion status, and check out an interactive map of all Village construction projects.
The Village wishes all residents a fun and relaxing Labor Day! We are grateful for the Village staff, safety personnel, business owners and residents who give their time and talents to make Wilmette the community we love!
