Wilmette Police Department: Beware of COVID-19 Contact Tracing Scams

The Wilmette Police Department warns residents to be on the lookout for COVID-19 contact tracing scams. Contact tracers track people who have an infectious disease and their contacts in order to prevent transmission. While the Illinois Department of Public Health employs contact tracers who may contact you by phone, they will never send you a link via text or email and will never ask for your SSN or financial information. Report fake contact tracers at ftc.gov/complaint. Learn more.
Be Safe as You Enjoy Downtown

Wilmette's bustling downtown is an asset to our  community, and basic safety precautions ensure that all shoppers, diners and visitors can enjoy and stay safe downtown! As you visit stores and restaurants downtown, please keep the following in mind:
  • Drivers: Watch your speed and watch out for pedestrians and cyclists. Always check for bikes and pedestrians before turning, pulling over and opening your door.
  • Pedestrians: Keep the foot traffic moving and avoid congregating on the sidewalks; COVID-19 physical distancing measures are still critical! Remember to wear a mask whenever a six-foot distance can't be maintained.
  • Cyclists: For all road and sidewalk users' safety, the Village advises that all cyclists walk bikes (do not ride) on the sidewalks downtown and that children walk their bikes through downtown (not ride on streets). Adults who follow the rules of the road are free to ride their bicycles on the streets downtown.
Fight the Bite: West Nile Virus Found in Wilmette

Recently, the North Shore Mosquito Abatement District found the first mosquitoes carrying West Nile virus in Wilmette in 2020. The virus has also been found in many surrounding communities. While the risk of being infected with West Nile virus is low at this time of year, here are some steps you can take to "Fight the Bite":
  • Use insect repellent.
  • Wear loose fitting clothing (mosquitoes can bite through tight-fitting clothes).
  • Avoid being outside during peak mosquito feeding times during the hours around dawn and dusk.
Remember, the best way to prevent mosquito bites is to prevent them from hatching in the first place by eliminating or treating standing water. The North Shore Mosquito Abatement District will treat pools of water at no cost.  Visit nsmad.org to report standing water, mosquito activity and dead birds and learn about preventative measures and repellents.
