Where Are We Now?

On September 6, 2022, Trustees approved an agreement with the Central Lake County Joint Action Water Agency (CLC JAWA) to study the feasibility, engineering, and estimated costs to connect Lake Zurich to Lake Michigan water.

The decision to transition to Lake Michigan water versus staying with the current deep-well system is extremely complex.  The Village recognizes that there are substantial costs in the multi-millions of dollars associated with changing the public water supply.

Why Are We Doing This?

Most importantly, the existing Lake Zurich water supply that comes from deep aquifer wells is safe and meets all State and Federal environmental regulations.

In 2019, Lake County revised its environmental regulations and informed the Village that it will no longer be taking radium (a naturally occurring element that is removed using ion exchange technology) via the traditional waste water stream.  Since then, the Village has contracted with Engineering Enterprises of Sugar Grove for a comprehensive study into various public water suppliers.

After a community workshop meeting at Village Hall in January 2022 and facility tours of different joint action water agencies, the Village Board directed Staff to explore in greater detail a partnership with the Central Lake County Joint Action Water Agency in Lake Bluff.

Old McHenry Crossings Public Information Meeting

The Lake County Division of Transportation is hosting a public information meeting for the Old McHenry Crossings Project study on September 28.  The purpose of the meeting is to report feedback received to date and to present design alternatives for public review and comment.

When: Wednesday, September 28, 2022

5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m.

Where: St. Matthew Lutheran Church Gymnasium

24500 N. Old McHenry Road

Hawthorn Woods

The study aims to improve safety, traffic operations, and connectivity for drivers, bikers, and pedestrians within and surrounding the Old McHenry Road and CN Railroad area and along Quentin Road in Hawthorn Woods, Lake Zurich, and Kildeer.

This meeting will be accessible to individuals with disabilities.  Anyone needing special assistance should contact Chuck Gleason, LCDOT Phase I Project Manager, at (847) 377-7447 prior to the meeting.

Reasons for the Study

Four highly traveled regional highways converging to this area, frequent freight trains, and three closely spaced intersections along Old McHenry Road have led to high traffic volumes and delays. Approximately 25,000 vehicles pass through the corridor each day and nearly 370 crashes have occurred in this area over the last five years.
