Neighbors Helping Neighbors Age in Place
Newsletter of
Northeast Village PDX
Northeast Village PDX is a group of neighbors in Northeast Portland, Oregon, who are creating a membership organization that will help seniors in the area stay in their own homes as they age - by providing volunteers to help with rides, simple home repairs,  friendly visits, and light yard work, as well as professional services (plumbing, electrical, care giving and others) at reduced rates. This newsletter will keep you up to date on the steps the Village is taking to achieve its goals.

Introduction to our Village Meeting

The October Northeast Village Information Session will be held at the Gregory Heights Library, 7921 NE Sandy Blvd.

Come and get acquainted with the Village movement in general, and the Northeast Village PDX in particular.
Keep sharp! Feel sharp! Be sharp!
No, its not an ad for razor blades or yet another brain game.  It's what you'll be if you do taxes with AARP Tax-Aide.

In Oregon, we have a winning combination that helps people do their taxes, saves taxpayers money, and bring in cash to the Oregon economy.  AARP-Tax-Aide partners with Cash Oregon to provide free tax preparation to Oregonians.

While there is no age limit-this service isn't just for seniors-but there are certain types of income sources that the preparers have not been trained to do-for example, rental income, business income if there are employees or loses.

Volunteers can help in four areas: tax preparation-don't worry, there is training, facilitation--greeting and helping taxpayers get their intake paperwork in order, translation--particularly Spanish, and administration-various tasks to support the operation

Last year in the Portland Area, over 500 volunteers served 20,255 taxpayers bringing over 22 million in federal tax refunds to working Oregonians and into the local economy.

Still people were turned away because there were not enough volunteers to help them. Check out the volunteer section of Cash Oregon's web site, cashoregon.org/volunteer, to learn more about this essential and rewarding opportunity.
Over 50 people signed up as Members to date ... with more to come
Northeast Village PDX is growing every day! We have had a surge of interest for participation in the village throughout the membership campaign.   We have enrolled over 50 new members, Full Service and Associate, and we have a long list of interested neighbors to still meet and interview. The opportunities for village services from our volunteers, activities, and the efforts of our outreach team at neighborhood fairs and events has created a strong base for our launch in November. If you have not sent in an interest form, do so now! November 1 st is just around the corner and we want you to join us!

You may contact us through the website at nevillagepdx.org or by email at nevillagepdx@gmail.com.   Our phone is 503-895-2750. A membership team volunteer will be in touch with you.

Northeast Village PDX Charter Memberships are still available through December 31 to any new member (or current member) who wants to make a donation of $500 or more to NE Village PDX.   Charter membership is tax deductible and holds membership fees to the current membership cost through 2020! Charter members will enjoy a great celebration party in January. A Charter membership for you will really help us cover our startup costs. To become a Charter Member, sign up when you join or email us at nevillagepdx@gmail.com.

An Orientation Meeting for new members is scheduled for Wednesday, Oct 19 from 3:00 to 4:30 p.m. at Rose City Park United Methodist Church, 5830 NE Alameda.

All new members will have a chance to meet our office volunteers, learn how to access services, track calendar events and programs, connect with our recommended vendors list, meet our Governing Council , and share ideas and questions with village members. The Orientation will also provide a social time to meet one another. Bring your membership packets, as you will have new information to take home with you.

Contact Vonnie Condon, vcondon100@gmail.com for more information or fill out the online form on our website.

Village Volunteer Report
Northeast Village PDX now has 45 volunteers who will be ready to provide services when the village opens. Most have been vetted and have gone through initial training. Among them are 15 drivers who will be ready to provide transportation to village members in need of rides.

Some volunteers are members of the Village, and some want to volunteer because they are committed to helping people live independently in northeast Portland. It's not too late for you to join Northeast Village either as a member or a volunteer, or both. Call 510-895-2750 or visit our website, http://nevillagepdx.org/services/membership-application/

Want to Help Establish the NE Village PDX Office?
Northeast Village recently took a big step forward by renting office space in the Cully neighborhood at 5012 NE 42nd Street. The office is being repainted and will open its doors to members and the public on November 1.

The new office has enough room for two desks, plus a small conference area. It is already equipped with a corner table and chairs, desktop PC and inkjet printer, thanks to members' generosity. For small community events, the building has a conference room that will accommodate up to 20 people.

But several things are needed to make the NE Village office fully functional. Donations of any of the following items (and/or cash to help purchase them) would be greatly appreciated. All donations are tax deductible. If you can help procure any of the following, please contact: Ron Laster: printresults@aol.com
  •     Two desks
  •     Laptop computer, keyboard, mouse and monitor
  •     Laser black and white printer
  •     Locking file cabinet
  •     Shredder
  •     Printer paper and other office supplies
  •     Small table lamp
If  you would like to make a cash donation, you may pay by credit card through our website donations page.  Otherwise, make check payable to "Villages NW fbo NE Village PDX",

College Essay Mentoring Project
Here's a volunteer project that I've enjoyed for the past several years.  Literary Arts sponsors college essay mentoring at four Portland high schools in October.

Each mentor is paired with a student applying to college for feedback and help on their application essay.  The session lasts ninety minutes. You don't need to be (or have been) a teacher; anyone who's been to college themselves or had children attend college will be a good mentor candidate.

Mentoring sessions this year are in the mornings on Oct. 12th at Madison HS, Oct. 18th at Roosevelt HS, Oct. 24th at Franklin HS, and in the afternoon on Oct. 20th at Benson HS.  If you're interested, you can contact Mel Wells, the project coordinator. Her e-mail is mel@literary-arts.org; phone is 503-227-2583 x. 105. Maybe I'll see you at a mentoring session!
