Village Requires Essential Workers and Residents Visiting Essential Businesses in Wilmette to Wear Face Coverings

In an effort to protect the health and safety of Wilmette residents and slow the spread of COVID-19, and in accordance with CDC guidelines, all individuals patronizing an essential business, working in an essential business or riding public transportation in Wilmette will be required to wear face coverings within the Village's boundaries starting on Monday, April 20. Face coverings are not required outdoors or in a personal vehicle.

Wilmette Village President Bob Bielinski signed an amended Declaration of Local Disaster and Public Health Emergency on Friday, April 17. It requires employees working at Wilmette businesses - deemed essential under the Governor's Executive Order - to wear proper face coverings as recommended by the CDC. Additionally, in accordance with CDC recommendations, all individuals entering an essential business in Wilmette are required to wear a face covering, along with anyone using public transportation. The new rules take effect on Monday, April 20 at open of business.

President Bielinski stated, "Directing businesses to require their employees to wear face coverings is only one step in our efforts to slow the spread of COVID-19. We, as residents, business owners and visitors, are all part of the community that makes Wilmette a great place. As part of that communal relationship, we all owe each other a duty to help prevent the spread of this disease. Wearing a face covering when entering a business open to the public is a simple task that we can all do for the good of not only Wilmette, but for everyone near and far. Therefore, I am requiring all individuals when entering an essential business in Wilmette to wear a face covering for not only your health, but for the health and safety of those around you."

The Village's Order also allows businesses to refuse admission or service to any individual who fails to wear a face covering, should the business feel that the safety of customers or employees would be best served by doing so.
