Don’t Walk on Frosted Ryegrass
Our mild Arizona winters provide the perfect opportunity to get outside and take advantage of the nice weather. But with the especially wet and cool weather we’ve had recently, now is a good time to remember that walking on frosted Ryegrass in the mornings can actually harm the grass. While frost is not in the forecast around the Valley yet, it’s a good idea to be prepared for much colder temperatures that may arrive in the coming months.
Normally, when you walk on blades of grass, they bend beneath the weight of your foot. However, when the blades of grass are frozen, they cannot bend and will break, resulting in dead turf. If you walk on the frosty turf, you will start to notice areas of dead grass where your footprints are.
Because of this, we recommend that residents wait to enjoy their winter Ryegrass until the sun has come up and melted away the morning frost. This will help ensure that your turf looks good for as long as possible before the transition back to Bermuda in the spring.

Fireworks Reminder
In Arizona, state law mandates the use and sale of consumer fireworks. Aerial fireworks are prohibited in Arizona including skyrockets, bottle rockets, Roman candles, reloadable shell devices, aerials, and single tube type devices unless the device is part of a permitted public fireworks display. There are several limitations on where fireworks can be used within the City of Peoria. View Peoria's City Code, Chapter 9 - Fire Prevention and Protection, sections 9-46 through 9-53 for firework limitations. Legal consumer fireworks may only be used on private property and are not permitted on city property, including parks, city streets, and city sidewalks. Fireworks are also prohibited on state land and school property unless a permit has been issued. For more information, visit www.peoriaaz.gov/fireworks.
Here are a few safety tips from the City of Peoria:
- Light fireworks outdoors in a clear area away from houses, dry leaves or grass, and flammable materials.
- Keep a bucket of water nearby for emergencies and to douse fireworks that do not properly ignite.
- Keep a hose with a shut-off nozzle nearby. The water should be on and the hose should be ready to instantly douse any wayward fires.
- Do not attempt to re-light or handle malfunctioning fireworks. Soak them with water and throw them away.
- Be sure people are out of range before lighting fireworks.
- Never have any portion of your body directly over a firework while lighting. Be sure to wear protective eyewear. An errant ember could cause permanent eye damage.
- Don't experiment with homemade fireworks.
- Put all used sparklers in the water bucket.
