March 2024

Severe Weather Preparedness Month

Transitioning to spring increases the risk of severe weather and tornado activity. April, May, and June have the most tornado touch downs in our state, averaging 25 in this period. Severe weather hazards also include thunderstorms and lightning. Seek shelter indoors if a storm approaches.

While we share this emergency spotlight during Severe Weather Preparedness Month, we ask that you please keep the best practices below in mind year-round:

  • Use a variety of early warning tools such as sirens, DuPage County Emergency Alert System, TV/Radio, CodeRed, and a Certified Weather Radio.
  • Prepare an emergency supplies kit with basic household items, including food and water. Make sure all household members know where the kit is located.
  • Create an evacuation and shelter plan and review them annually.
  • Create an emergency contact list and review it annually.

National Social Work Month

March is National Social Work Month. This year, the Carol Stream Social Service Unit (SSU) is celebrating its 40th anniversary!

The SSU works closely with the Carol Stream Police Department and provides essential services such as crisis intervention, short-term counseling, case management, and countless others. The SSU is staffed by four full-time social workers and a full-time secretary. Services are confidential and free-of-charge for residents.

For more information, please contact the Social Service Unit via email or by calling (630) 871-6280.

Rain Barrel Sale Event

Interested in lowering your water bill while helping the environment? Consider utilizing a rain barrel! Catching and collecting the rainwater that falls on our roofs is perfect for watering lawns, gardens, or washing cars. Rain barrels can help reduce local flooding, reduce stress on storm sewer system infrastructure, and reduce the amount of pollutants in runoff that reaches rivers and streams. They are also a simple, efficient, low-cost method to reduce the amount of stormwater runoff from your property.

In partnership with The Conservation Foundation, the Village is offering the sale of rain barrels and other household conservation products. For more information or to place an order, please visit Upcycle's website. When placing an order, please select "Village of Carol Stream" as the event location if you would like to pick up your item(s) in-person at Village Hall to avoid home delivery fees. Mail-in orders are due April 26, and online orders are due April 29.

2024 Pond & Stream Sweep

Each year, the Village of Carol Stream conducts its Pond & Stream Sweep concurrently with The Conservation Foundation's DuPage River Sweep. Join us on May 4 for this annual clean-up event to help beautify the community.

Volunteer hours are 9:00 a.m. to noon on Saturday, May 4. If you are interested in volunteering, please register through our online form. If you would like to volunteer to pick up litter on another date, you may select that date when registering online (note that a separate reservation will need to be done for each date).

Basic equipment (e.g. pokers, plastic bags, and gloves) will be available for pickup the week of the event. All garbage should be properly secured and placed adjacent to the roadway so that staff can pick up for disposal after the event. If you have any questions, please contact the Engineering Services Department at (630)-871-6220 or via email.

Yard Waste Collection Begins April 1

Flood Brothers will begin their yard waste collection program starting April 1. Residents may place yard waste in 32-gallon cans or in yard waste paper bags with yard waste stickers affixed to them. Note that a single can or paper bag cannot weigh more than 50 pounds.

Yard waste stickers will be available for purchase at Village Hall, as well as Jewel-Osco (750 Army Trail Rd.), Caputo's Fresh Market (550 E. North Ave.), and Meijer (130 S. Gary Ave. - Bloomingdale) starting Monday, March 25.

For more information regarding yard waste collection, please visit the Village website.

Now Hiring Seasonal Positions

The Public Works Department is hiring seasonal workers to assist with labor operations, including landscaping, minor utility repairs, and other general maintenance tasks. Working hours will be Monday through Friday, from 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. during the months of May through September. Please contact the Human Resources Department via email or at (630)-871-6240 if you have any questions or are interested in a seasonal position.

Solicitor Reminder

As a reminder, all solicitors within the Village are required to have a Village permit. As part of the permit application process, solicitors must pass a criminal background check.

A Village permit does not mean that the Village is endorsing a particular company, product, or service. Residents have the right to request to see a solicitor's permit from the Village. The permit is bright yellow and easy to identify.

Residents may pick up a "No Solicitors" sticker at the Village Hall to place on their front door. If a solicitor ignores a "No Solicitors" sticker, or your requests for them to leave, please call 9-1-1 and report them.

Event Sponsorships Available

The Village is actively seeking sponsors for the 2024 Summer Concert Series! This is your chance to promote your organization or business, connect with the community, and interact with hundreds of residents and visitors.
