In this newsletter, you will find information about upcoming holiday celebrations in neighboring towns, and please note that Village Hall will be closed on July 4 - 5 in observance of Independence Day. It's mosquito season, and safety tips are provided to guard against West Nile Virus. Updates are provided on the upcoming Robert Parker Coffin Road project, in addition to the Old McHenry Road project - which is now in its final phases. Two building demolitions are planned for the Red Oaks development at 340-344 Historical Drive after the Village Board approved a waiver of the 120 day waiting period. The Village is encouraging residents to 'get counted' in the upcoming 2020 U.S. Census, as well as participate in the Responding to Hunger campaign by dropping off non-perishable food items at Village Hall through July 19. The summer concert series begins in mid-July at Towner Green, and please also see the community calendar below.

According to the Lake County Health Department, the first mosquito pool in Lake County has tested positive for West Nile Virus (WNV) in Highland Park. This is the first confirmed indicator of WNV in Lake County this year.
Throughout 2018, there were eight cases and one death due to WNV. Residents are reminded to follow safety tips to protect against mosquitos that carry the virus. Please visit this link to learn how to practice the '4 Ds of Defense' and for additional safety information.

'Get Counted' in the 2020 Census
|
The U.S. Census is held every ten years, and the Village of Long Grove is encouraging residents to 'get counted' and participate in the upcoming 2020 Census. For every resident counted in the Long Grove community, the Village receives $142.06 from the State of Illinois, which totals $1,142,589 annually. This amount is roughly how much the Village spends each year on the road paving program. The Village of Long Grove does not levy a municipal property tax and every dollar received by the government is based upon the total population.
An example of how important participation in the census is: for the 2010 Census, 11.3% or 908 Long Grove Residents did not respond to the survey, so they were not counted in the Village's population. As a result, the Village did not receive more than $1 million in funds.
Over the next couple of months, U.S. Census workers will be in the community confirming residential addresses. These workers should be wearing identification and able to produce it upon request.

Village Hall is Closed July 4 & 5 for Independence Day Holiday
|

In observance of the Independence Day holiday, Village Hall will be closed Thursday, July 4 and Friday, July 5, 2019. Village Hall will resume normal business hours on Monday, July 8 from 8:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m.
The Village wishes residents a safe and enjoyable holiday!

Robert Parker Coffin Road Project Begins After July 4th Holiday

The Robert Parker Coffin (RPC) Road project is scheduled to begin after the July 4th holiday. Improvements will include new landscaping, streetlights, benches, ADA accessible sidewalks, and storm sewer improvements. The Village will also be extending its public water main down Robert Parker Coffin Road which is the first phase in the project. Once completed, all properties in the downtown area will have access to public water which will assist in maintaining and attracting new businesses to the downtown district. In addition to these improvements, the RPC Bridge's timber cover will be replaced, and painting and abutment repairs for the Bridge are also planned. The RPC Project is expected to wrap up by Thanksgiving (weather-permitting). For the duration of this project, businesses in downtown Long Grove will remain open and signage will show direct access.

Village Waives Demolition Waiting Period for Historical Lane Buildings

The Village of Long Grove has waived the normal 120 day waiting period for demolition to begin of two of the five buildings located on the Red Oaks development at 340-344 Historical Lane in downtown Long Grove. The development is just east of Chatterbox and the Covered Bridge Creamery, on the south side of Old McHenry Road.
One of the buildings to be demolished is named 'Big Red'. The property owners' plan is to ultimately create additional parking or leave the area as open space. The time period to backfill for seed or gravel is estimated to take roughly six months from when the demolition begins. The second building - the Grey Performing Arts Building - will be demolished to provide increased community and retail sales or office space, in addition to a restaurant and banquet hall. It is estimated it will take approximately one year from demolition to the new construction.
The owner requested the waiver due to the poor condition of the buildings, which would be cost prohibitive to restore or remodel. Both buildings have no historical value, as each were added onto the original structure in the 1980s. The historical building on this property, 'Old Red' which dates back to 1855 is at 340 Old McHenry Road (pictured above) and will be fully restored and preserved.

The Old McHenry Road project is now in its final phases. Paving is complete at the south and north end of Old McHenry Road. Preparation work is ongoing for sod and landscape restoration, in addition to miscellaneous clean up work. Crews will resume sod installation, driveway construction, and miscellaneous preparation work for the final asphalt surface layer.
Please note that all work is weather-dependent.
Traffic Impacts:

Lake County/APWA-Chicago Chapter
are Responding to Hunger
|
|
Lake County and the American Public Works Association (APWA)-Chicago Chapter are sponsoring the 'Responding to Hunger' campaign, which includes the Village of Long Grove and dozens of municipalities, townships and other agencies. Now through Friday, July 19, 2019, Long Grove residents are encouraged to drop off non-perishable food items in a collection box at Village Hall, 3110 Old McHenry Road, in the front entrance. Items will be transported to the Northern Illinois Food Bank to provide food for in-need Lake County residents.
This food collection period leads up to the Responding to Hunger Touch-A-Truck event on Tuesday, July 23 from 8:00 a.m. until noon at the Lake County Fairgrounds, 1060 E. Peterson Road in Grayslake. Children of all ages will be able to get an up-close look and climb aboard a wide variety of public works vehicles and learn about the important role that public works plays in our every day lives.

Summer Concert Series Begins July 14th at Towner Green
|
|
The Long Grove Arts & Music Council (LGAMC) presents the 2019 Summer Concerts, beginning at 4:00 p.m. on the following Sundays at Towner Green, 132 Old McHenry Road in downtown Long Grove:
July 14 Corky Siegel & Will Tilson August 4 Creole Stomp August 11 Sons of the Never Wrong August 18 The Don Stiernberg Quartet
Admission is free, but donations are appreciated to support the organization and future concerts.
The Village of Long Grove provided $10,000 in grant funding to the LGAMC to offset the cost of the performances for the season to help ensure this entertainment continues to be provided for residents and visitors. Please check the LGAMC website for schedule changes or entertainment additions at lgamc.org.
