Mayday! Mayday! – Pope Francis and Vincentian Voices

Fr. Freund reflects on what some might call Pope Francis’s "Mayday signal" for workers today. Read or listen to the post HERE.

Recounting Grace (Luke 24:35)

Do we have our own memories of “breaking the bread?”
Can you recount events in which you "recognized Him?" Retelling them can chisel foundation stones for Christian witnessing. These the stories of hearts opening to new degrees of God’s intimacy, remembrances of how a word or event pulled back a curtain on the spirit’s nearness.

Very Vincentian Poem
The Second Coming
By William Butler Yeats

Turning and turning in the widening gyre
    The falcon cannot hear the falconer;
    Things fall apart; the centre cannot hold;
    Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world,
    The blood-dimmed tide is loosed, and everywhere
    The ceremony of innocence is drowned;
    The best lack all conviction, while the worst
    Are full of passionate intensity.
    Surely some revelation is at hand;
    Surely the Second Coming is at hand.
    The Second Coming! Hardly are those words out
    When a vast image out of Spiritus Mundi
    Troubles my sight: a waste of desert sand;
    A shape with lion body and the head of a man,
    A gaze blank and pitiless as the sun,
    Is moving its slow thighs, while all about it
    Wind shadows of the indignant desert birds.
    The darkness drops again but now I know
    That twenty centuries of stony sleep
    Were vexed to nightmare by a rocking cradle,
    And what rough beast, its hour come round at last,
    Slouches towards Bethlehem to be born?
William Butler Yeats (13 June 1865 – 28 January 1939) was an Irish poet, dramatist, writer and one of the foremost figures of 20th-century literature. He was a driving force behind the Irish Literary Revival and became a pillar of the Irish literary establishment who helped to found the Abbey Theatre, and in his later years.
