Moving On
(Jeremiah 1:17-19)
“Call,” a notion that figures prominently in the Scriptures, God summoning people to change direction. Heading nowhere in particular, someone senses an inner prod to take some new course. The prophets experience this, living through ordinary days when some faint impulse begins to register inside them. Read the post HERE.

A Vincentian View: Be Kind
Sometimes when I read the Scriptures, a word pops out for me in a way that it has not done before. In a Eucharist of the past week, Psalm 103 had that effect. The repeated responsorial verse professed “The Lord is kind and merciful.” The word that really emerged in the phrase was “kind.” Read the post HERE.

A “We” Virus?
A million refugees, no refugee camps: Poles open their homes to Ukrainians (Crux )
The headline immediately caught my attention – especially since the reality as I write has swelled to more like two million.
The Polish Ambassador to the United States, Marek Magierowski, told CNN: “This is probably the first migration crisis in Europe’s history, in which the host country doesn’t need to build refugee camps.”

Professor Michael Sampson taught Ukrainian children as a Fulbright Scholar and now imagines the terrors they face
The crisp morning last October I had been anticipating for months finally arrived. After a two-day orientation organized by Fulbright Ukraine, I flew to Dnipro and arrived at my new apartment in the city center. I felt mild culture shock as I walked the streets, encountered the Cyrillic alphabet on storefronts, and heard Russian and Ukrainian being spoken by everyone around me. Read his story HERE.

The Saint Vincent de Paul
Food Pantry Stomp
Madison, Wisconsin, 1980
By Martín Espada
Waiting for the carton of food
given with Christian suspicion
even to agency-certified charity cases
like me,
thin and brittle
as uncooked linguini,
anticipating the factory-damaged cans
of tomato soup, beets, three-bean salad
in a welfare cornucopia,
I spotted a squashed dollar bill
on the floor, and with
a Saint Vincent de Paul food pantry stomp
pinned it under my sneaker,
tied my laces meticulously,
and stuffed the bill in my sock
like a smuggler of diamonds,
all beneath the plaster statue wingspan
of Saint Vinnie,
who was unaware
of the dance
named in his honor
by a maraca shaker
in the salsa band
of the unemployed.
