Keith Anderson has returned to the Whelen US TimeTrial Championship in style, winning both days of competition in the TT-Unlimited class and setting a new series lap record around Road America. While Anderson gave Viper outright honors, a total of six different manufacturers were represented on the podium during NARRA's April 11-13 event at Elkhart Lake, with Porsche and Mitsubishi also taking class wins.

The North American Road Racing Association's Whelen US TimeTrial Championship is quickly becoming the nation's premier time-trial series, and its first appearance to Wisconsin's famed Road America circuit didn't disappoint, as a number of the series top drivers were met with strong competition from new entrants.

Before getting down to business, teams, friends and family were welcomed appropriately to the region not far from Johnsonville by Craftlogic Software with a 'Beer & Brats' party Friday night.

Friday also featured another time-trial event, Brock Yates' Tire Rack One Lap of America, providing a glimpse of the action to come over the weekend.

New names filled the TT-3 ranks with a tight battle for the top step of the podium developing between the Jestr Tuning Mitsubishi Evo 8 of Jeremy Deitzel and the Porsche Cayman of David Gronke.

The pair traded tenths during Saturday's sessions. Deitzel laid down a 2:31.512 in the second session to record his best time of the day. However, in the third and final timed run of the day Gronke extracted just enough to finish two one-hundreds of a second up. With a time of 2:31.491 he took the class win. Jerry Heine (Buick Grand Sport) completed Saturday's TT-3 podium.

Gronke continued the trend on Sunday, faster still with a 2:30.142, but Deitzel had the final say to give Mitsubishi its first Whelen USTTC class win, with an impressive time of 2:29.268. The BMW M3 of Andy Klatzky finished third.

TT-2 class points leaders Tanya Mazyck and Tim Jelle met their match in the form of a pair of Porsches. John Machul (Porsche GT3 RS, 2:26.002) gave the german marque another class win for the year on Saturday, his time a full second clear of Jelle (Dodge Viper GTS). Teo Hoffman's GT3 RS kept Tanya Mazyck's Viper SRT10 off the podium.

Determined to rectify the situation on Sunday, Jelle and Mazyck pushed hard to put Machul's Porsche in the middle of a Viper sandwich, Jelle winning the TT-2 class with a time of 2:25.268.

Usual TT-1 frontrunner, and current points leader, George MacDonald found the going tough. Back behind the wheel of his green 'Lolly Girl' Dodge Viper Comp Coupe in its first outing since his opening weekend mishap at Inde Motorsports Ranch, it was clear he was taking to the track tentatively and while he finished a solid fourth in class, he posed little threat.

On the other hand, Richard Startare (Dezigns Construction Viper GTS Coupe) who finished second in both rounds at Road Atlanta, was in the thick of things yet again.

Along with Keith Prociuk and Seth Palatnik, Startare formed a trio of Vipers at the top of the TT-1 time-sheet on Saturday. While less than three tenths separated the men, Palatnik's (Viper ACR) benchmark of 2:23:576 in the second session endured for the class win from Prociuk (2:23.698) and Startare (2:23.827).

Sunday saw the order reverse as Startare found more than a second overnight to take his first class win of 2012 with a 2:22.114, while Prociuk (2:23.140) bumped Palatnik (2:23.339) down to third. MacDonald again finished fourth.

At the top of the time-sheets all weekend was Keith Anderson, his Viper SRT-10 winning both days of competition in the no-holds-barred Unlimited class and outright honors.

On Saturday Anderson lapped Road America's 14 turn, 4.048 mile track in 2:23.049.

The next TT-U car was Jason Kennedy's Chevrolet Corvette C06, with a 2:23.783, while the Good Neighbors Support Services car of Jeff Bawden (Dodge Viper SRT-10, 2:25.795) took third.

Interestingly it was the TT-1 Viper ACR of Seth Palatnik who was closest to Anderson on Saturday.

No one, however, would get near Anderson on Sunday. In the day's second session he dropped a staggering 3.8 seconds from his Saturday best to record a 2:19.209, setting a new Whelen USTTC track lap record.

Kennedy (2:22.577) and Bawden (2:25.494) also improved their times to score second and third respectively in the unlimited class on Sunday.

To create fair and close competition in 2012, NARRA tweaked the simple power-to-weight ratio class structure of the Whelen USTTC, while adding the TT-3 class.

The strong competition seen throughout the classes at Road America is a testament to those rule changes, as is the fact that of the six makes entered- BMW, Buick, Corvette, Mitsubishi, Porsche and Viper- each finished with at least one podium position.

The series expects even more diversity and increased competition next month as some of the nation's top time-attack drivers from the RealTimeAttack ranks join the Whelen US TimeTrial Championship at New Jersey, June 8-10.

Bridging the gap between driver-ed and wheel-to-wheel racing, the Whelen USTTC offers drivers a national time-trial championship with contingencies, trophies and exposure equal to any racing series. The series attracts top tuning houses and time-attack teams from across the country because of its high-level competition, and no-holds-barred unlimited class.

Fielding as many as 47 cars in 2011, the USGTC is rapidly becoming the largest high performance GT racing series in the USA. Amateur and semi-pro drivers race against the might of professional drivers and factory teams for glory, contingencies and exposure. Cars are placed in to four classes based on power-to-weight ratio, including an unlimited class allowing the country's fastest cars to compete.
