Hanover School Board clarifies its stance on student-led protests, walkouts

Three student-led protests this school year at three different Hanover County high schools prompted the county's School Board Tuesday night to consider a proposed addition to the student code of conduct that clarifies its stance on protests and walkouts. The changes presented would add protests and walkouts to the glossary of definitions at the end of the code.

Prince William teachers, school division officials verify majority staff support for collective bargaining

The employee signature cards have been counted and verified. Now, the Prince William County School Board will vote sometime before mid-July on whether to move forward with collective bargaining for qualifying school division staff.

26 schools in Fairfax County experiencing COVID-19 outbreak

Twenty-six schools in Fairfax County are dealing with a coronavirus outbreak, according to the Virginia Department of Health's COVID-19 dashboard. An outbreak is defined as a cluster of three or more cases of COVID-19 illness in a group within 14 days. The Fairfax County school system has the highest number of schools reporting an outbreak in the region.

Lynchburg City Council announces school board interviews

Following two public hearings, Lynchburg City Council announced Wednesday it will move forward in the coming weeks with interviewing candidates for three open school board seats. The school board terms of District 1 representative Susan Morrison, District 2 representative Gary Harvey and District 3 representative Michael Nilles will expire on June 30, leaving one seat open in each district across the Hill City.

Henry County School Board approves over $2.1 million in new expenditures

As the school year comes to a close, the Henry County School Board committed over $2.1 million in new expenditures at a regular meeting on Thursday. The greatest share of expenses approved will go to replace the domestic water heating system at Magna Vista High School.

The counsel for Loudoun County schools confirmed that school employees have been issued subpoenas to turn over records for an ongoing grand jury investigation by the Virginia State's Attorney's Office into the school system's handling of sexual assaults that happened last year.

Central Virginia school districts adjust budgets as fuel prices continue to rise

The recent spike in gas prices is causing some school districts to adjust their planned school year budget to cover bus fuel. During a school board meeting on Tuesday night, Hanover County Public Schools approved a budget shift of $220,000 from bus maintenance, repairs, insurance, and issues to cover the increased cost of Diesel fuel for the rest of the school year.
