State considers changes to school accreditation

Next week, the Virginia Board of Education will consider changes to how schools across the state are scored and measured as effective - part of Gov. Glenn Youngkin's push to raise standards and increase transparency about student test scores.

Roanoke School Board approves names for admin offices, technical education center

The Roanoke School Board on Tuesday approved names for two of the school division's educational buildings currently undergoing renovation. The new administrative headquarters on Campbell Avenue will be called the William B. Robertson Administration Building. Robertson was a native Roanoker and city school administrator who became an adviser to Virginia Gov.

Chesterfield will stock Narcan in schools to fight opioid overdoses

CHESTERFIELD, Va. (WRIC) - Schools in Chesterfield will soon be stocked with Narcan, an anti-opioid treatment, in an effort by the county to fight deadly overdoses. Heather Snyder, a registered nurse and Student Health Services Coordinator for Chesterfield County, told the board at a meeting on Tuesday, March 11 that the medication would soon be widely available in the community - including in schools.

HCPS Teacher Named Finalist In Presidential Math And Science Teaching Award

A Harrisonburg educator has been named one of Virginia's finalists for the 2023 Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching. Erich Sneller, an honors STEM chemistry and Spanish-language environmental science teacher at Harrisonburg High School, is a science finalist for the award, Virginia Secretary of Education Aimee Guidera announced Monday.

Roanoke County supervisors pass school capital funding plan, reduced tax rates

The Roanoke County Board of Supervisors lowered the locality's tax rates for the upcoming year, while also officially passing its $130 million proposal to fund three capital projects for the school system.

Spotsylvania school employees can no longer have voluntary payroll deductions go to Spotsy Education Association

Employees of Spotsylvania County Public Schools can no longer elect to pay membership dues to the Spotsylvania Education Association through voluntary payroll deductions. The School Board approved, by a 4-3 vote, revisions to regulation DLB-R2 that remove SEA from the list of approved voluntary deductions.

Virginia Teens Create App to Teach Gen Z How to Invest

Investing can be overwhelming - especially if you're only in high school. A group of teenagers in Leesburg, Virginia, is working to help young people understand finance. The Academies of Loudoun students created an app called Minvest. "Everyone in Gen Z should have access to financial education and the tools to take control of their financial future," cofounder Arjun Setty said.

VA Secretary of Education calls for higher standards to reverse decline in AP achievement

Virginia's Secretary of Education is calling for higher standards for the state's students and schools. Aimee Guidera said this is necessary to reverse a "nearly decade-long decline in the performance of Virginia students on Advanced Placement (AP) exams.

How you can help Richmond rename some of their schools

RICHMOND, Va. - Richmond Public Schools is asking for input on renaming several of their schools. Principals at Binford Middle School, John B. Cary and Ginter Park Elementary Schools and George Wythe High School are leading renaming committees to foster engagement in the process.
