Va. education board delays review of new history and social studies standards

The Virginia Board of Education is pushing back its review of new state standards for history and social studies, after overwhelming pushback from parents, teachers and community members who characterized the new standards as lacking context, being politically motivated andeven being "whitewashed." The Prince William County School Board has adopted a policy change mandating that school administrators notify parents and guardians of any upcoming schoolwide presentations.

School Board hears concern, parents' angst over sexual book content - Chesterfield Observer

Chesterfield County School Board faced passionate comments from parents of students at its Nov. 7 meeting as the panel reviewed policy changes relating to parental notification over sexually explicit classroom material. One speaker was escorted from the podium by police officers after disregarding her comment time limit.

School threat remains under investigation | Carroll News

Local law enforcement agencies continue to investigate a threat to area schools Nov. 16 following a social media posting. According to Chief Investigator Chuck Edwards of the Carroll County Sheriff's Department, an adult Carroll County man was taken into custody Thursday after a non-specific social media threat was posted online.

Youngkin acknowledges 'omissions and mistakes' in draft history standards

ARLINGTON COUNTY - Gov. Glenn Youngkin expressed disappointment on Friday in the draft history standards his administration produced for Virginia's K-12 schools, acknowledging " omissions and mistakes." The state Board of Education, with a majority appointed by Youngkin, on Thursday rejected a revised version of the state's K-12 history standards his administration proposed.

Board of Education dodges Youngkin bid for emergency accreditation overhaul

The state Board of Education did not bite on a recommendation from Gov. Glenn Youngkin's administration to circumvent normal process and use emergency authority to quickly overhaul the state's school accreditation system in time for next school year.

Fairfax County schools weigh changes to high school grading policy

Virginia's largest school system has started the process of reevaluating its high school grading policy, after principals reported variation in grading processes from school to school. Sloan Presidio, Fairfax County Public Schools chief academic officer, said during a work session Tuesday that the county hadn't reviewed grading and reporting practices in over five years.

Norfolk School Board plans to reverse changes to public comment following backlash

NORFOLK - The Norfolk School Board is set to adjust its public comment practices again to allow citizens to speak on non-agenda items on-camera. This came after community members and some board members spoke out against a previous decision to have non-agenda item-related comments after the board's adjournment.
