Culture wars rage in Loudoun County, with dueling parent groups and school board recalls

Furious fights over school policy and curriculum - some a proxy for larger cultural conflicts - continued unabated in Loudoun County this week, with some parents moving to recall members of the embattled school board and others forming a group to oppose that effort.

New TikTok trend leading Southwest Virginia students to vandalize school property

ROANOKE, Va. - A new social media trend is challenging students to record themselves vandalizing school bathrooms. School leaders say it's happening in multiple districts in Southwest Virginia. It's a challenge on TikTok called "Devious Licks." Students record themselves vandalizing school bathrooms and post it to the social media app.

Williamsburg-James City County School Division to begin at-home, in-school COVID-19 testing

Every student and staff member is eligible to participate in the program as long as they sign a consent form. But, the division highly recommends high school and middle school athletes and coaches, extracurricular participants and unvaccinated staff members participate.

Teachers from Roanoke, Bedford County and Appomattox County in running for Virginia Teacher of the Year

ROANOKE, Va. - When the 2021 Virginia Teacher of the Year is announced, it could be a familiar name for some. Of the eight regional winners now competing for the statewide title, three are from our region. Eboni Harrington, who teaches 7th-grade math at Lucy Addison Middle School in Roanoke is one of those regional winners.

Richmond Schools adjust attendance policy for students amid COVID

RPS will exclude from the count of 18 days any excused absences. Since the division has been telling students to stay home this year if they experience symptoms of COVID-19, their goal is to make sure attendance rules for legitimate sickness or quarantining don't count against students.

Two high schools in Northern Virginia placed on lockdown due to shooting threats

Two high schools in Northern Virginia were under lockdown Wednesday after violent threats were made on their respective campuses, and in one case, a weapon was found and a student is in custody. Officials at Alexandria City High School said they received a call in the morning "about a student who possessed a weapon outside of the school building."

Virginia Students Study Global Problems in Innovation Lab

(TNS) - On a Thursday night inside a place in Newport News called an innovation laboratory, a half-dozen students were learning about United Nations' goals for transforming the world. The students are spending about a month learning about a variety of social and environmental problems while brainstorming ways to raise money to address the challenges in their own communities.

DPS launches plan to increase on-time graduation rate

DANVILLE, Va. - Last week, the Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) released on-time graduation rates for the 2020-2021 school year which showed which percentages of Virginia students graduated with their cohort this year. Statewide, they reported a 93 percent on time graduation rate for the class of 2021, with a 4.3 percent dropout rate.

Accomack County school board tables transgender policy, will revisit at a future date

The Accomack County Board of Education voted to table a "treatment of transgender students" policy at its Tuesday work session as it hopes to make the policy more specific. The tabled policy was a model policy for Virginia public schools.
