CHESAPEAKE - Plans are coming together for a new career and technical education center in Chesapeake. On Monday, administrators presented a vision to board members for the tentatively named Career Academies of Chesapeake, to replace the division's aging Chesapeake Career Center.

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) - Back in October of 1972, when Marge Moore started driving for Virginia Beach Public Schools, a gallon of gas was only 55 cents, Richard Nixon was President and minimum wage was $1.60 an hour. 50 years later, she's still picking up kids at the bus stop and plans to keep doing what she loves.

Work is progressing on an approximately $64.4 million renovation of James Wood High School. James Wood is the oldest of Frederick County Public Schools' three high schools. It was built in 1980 on Apple Pie Ridge Road to accommodate 1,283 students, according to Kevin Kenney, the school division's supervisor of construction.

The Lynchburg Fire Department visited Dearington Elementary School on Thursday for National Fire Prevention Week. Firefighters explained the dangers of a fire and gave tips like "stop, drop and roll" and to stay close to the ground when smoke is in the air.

A Henrico County jury found Short Pump Middle School gym teacher Dean Lakey not guilty of five five felony charges that stemmed from allegations that he sexually assaulted a student in 2017. Lakey, 61, said after the jury reached its verdict on Thursday that he is thankful for his friends and family who helped him along the way, especially his three daughters.

LOW MOOR, Va. - The Alleghany Highlands School Board approved a one-time bonus for its employees on Tuesday. Full-time employees will receive $2,000 while part-time employees will receive $1,000. To qualify, employees must work for the division on Dec. 1, 2022.

The Pulaski County School Board approved, at its meeting on October 11, 2022, the establishment of a health and dental clinic on the campus of Pulaski County High School in partnership with the Community Health Center of the New River Valley. ​

BERRYVILLE - The Clarke County Education Foundation has announced a new scholarship to help teachers pay for continuing education. The Kenneth and Barbara Thomas Memorial Endowment Scholarship was formed by the Thomas family plus more than 30 friends of the family who made donations in the couple's memory.

Stafford County Public Schools is conducting tests on all its water fountains before those that have been closed since the pandemic will be reopened. The School Board on Tuesday approved using $286,279 in COVID-19 relief funds to award a contract to Apex Companies to carry out testing on all drinking water sources in school division buildings.

The chairman of the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors is urging Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin and Secretary of Education Aimee Guidera to make immediate changes to current procedures to ensure that school systems are notified when an employee is arrested.
