The conference will also feature the 2023 Virginia Teacher of the Year, Ms. Fabiana Parker from Spotsylvania County Public Schools, as well as award presentations for the VSBA Excellence in Workforce Readiness Awards, VSBA Food for Thought Awards, and VSBA 2023 Student Essay Scholarship Awards.

Veteran school board member James Coleman recognized for years of service ahead of final meeting

Outgoing Chair of the Lynchburg City School Board James Coleman was honored by his colleagues last week for his nearly decade worth of service and contributions to public education in the Hill City.

Caroline dedicates track facility to longtime coach Sansberry Harvey

On Wednesday, the track-and-field facility at Caroline County High School was renamed for longtime coach Sansberry Harvey. The paint is still drying on the new sign bearing Coach Harvey's name, which was officially unveiled to the community at a dedication and ribbon-cutting ceremony Wednesday evening. Harvey began working with Caroline County Public Schools in 1977.

Atkins wins state in Skills USA | Carroll News

These two Cardboard Assisted Design creations by Cavalier Seth Atkins won first place in the Skills USA State Competition in occupational display in the automotive division. Atkins barely had time to squeeze in lunch during the April event as judges and participants appeared enthralled with the working cardboard models which could be taken apart.

School Board Committee Gets First Look at LEA's Collective Bargaining Resolution

Loudoun Education Association President Sandy Sullivan on June 5 presented LEA's collective bargaining resolution to the Legislative & Policy Committee of the School Board. The School Board directed the committee to draft a collective bargaining resolution for the board to consider.

Fredericksburg School Board approves superintendent's contract renewal

The Fredericksburg School Board on Monday unanimously approved the renewal of superintendent Marci Catlett's contract for another four years, effective July 1, 2023, through June 30, 2027. "FCPS is seeing the tangible benefits of Dr. Catlett's leadership and is excited to extend her contract for another four years," School Board Chair Jennifer Boyd told The Free Lance-Star on Friday.

Kids keep bringing guns to school. Can AI weapons detectors help?

In January, a 6-year-old pulled a gun out of his backpack at Richneck Elementary School in Newport News, Va. He pointed it at his first-grade teacher and shot her in the chest. Almost immediately after the shooting, theNewport News school system decided to put weapons detectors in all its schools.

Bedford County School Board approves policy limiting discussion of sexual orientation and gender

The Bedford County School Board voted Thursday to approve a policy preventing teachers from initiating discussions with students about sexual orientation or gender identity. The policy, which was amended from a 2021 version, is the first of its kind in the state at the school board level, according to the American Civil Liberties Union of Virginia.

Join us for the 38th Annual VSBA Conference on Education, commencing with a keynote address by Ms. Fabiana Parker, the 2023 Virginia Teacher of the Year. Following Ms. Parker's presentation, we have VACORP assisting us in presenting the prestigious 2023 Excellence in Workforce Readiness Awards. Next, leaders from various school divisions across Virginia will convene to participate in a range of engaging mini-workshops. These workshops will showcase successful practices implemented in Virginia's school divisions, offering valuable insights and strategies for all attendees. After the roundtable presentations, participants will have the opportunity to partake in optional regional meeting. During the lunch break, we will announce the winners of the annual VSBA Food for Thought 2023 awards. Additionally, we are privileged to have recipients of the 2023 Student Essay Scholarship address the audience.
