Norfolk Public Schools received a $965,000 award to support recruitment efforts, according to a Monday press release. The Virginia Department of Education's Recruitment Incentive for Public Education grant, or RIPE, was funded last year to help divisions across fill instructional positions.

Longtime Hanover County School Board member John Axselle III is not seeking another term. Axselle has represented the Beaverdam District since 1995. He plans to retire after his current term, which ends June 30. He had been chairman of the seven-member board.

STUART - So-called inappropriate reading materials are causing a stir in Patrick County - but all but one of the books in question are not even found in its school libraries. The reading materials and curriculum in question were brought up by Peters Creek Representative Denise Stirewalt at the April Patrick County School board meeting.

HARRISONBURG, Va. (WHSV) - A big security improvement will be coming to Rockingham County Public Schools in the next year. This summer the school division will begin looking into installing an electric key card entry system at all of its schools.

At about 7 a.m. on a cold morning in early March, the power went out at Mount Vernon Community School in Alexandria. When the children arrived, the teachers walked them through the halls with flashlights, settled them into their classrooms and began teaching as if nothing had happened.

A Shenandoah County School Board member says the Shenandoah County Board of Supervisors adopted a budget to cover a teacher salary boost that the School Board did not endorse. The School Board asked the Board of Supervisors to provide enough money in next year's county budget so system teachers could receive a 6% pay increase.
