The first state board of education meeting featuring several new members - all appointed by Gov. Glenn Youngkin - will be held Aug. 17. One key item on the agenda is the consideration of new draft history standards.

Newly released data shows that about 1 in 10 Virginia children are experiencing mental health problems. Those numbers are on par with the national average. The Annie E Casey foundation says 11% of children in Virginia - ages three to 17 - are suffering from anxiety or depression.

At Thursday's Bedford County School Board meeting, parents weighed in on the division's proposed redistricting plan meant to reduce overcrowding in Forest zone elementary schools. Under the proposed redistricting and boundary adjustment plan, some elementary students in the Forest zone would be moved to Otter River, Big Island, Thomas Jefferson, and Bedford elementary schools, which currently can take on higher student capacities.

By 10:15 Thursday morning, roughly 12,000 brand new brightly colored backpacks stuffed with school supplies were ready to be placed in the hands of Richmond-area students. But that was only the beginning. The goal was to stuff 50,000 backpacks for students living in Richmond, Petersburg, and the counties of Hanover, Henrico, and Chesterfield in a single day.

NORFOLK, Va. - Shelby Pepmeyer is a Norfolk school teacher certified in both general and special education. "Teaching is like my whole life, basically," Pepmeyer told News 3. After graduating and getting certified in her home state of Pennsylvania, she moved to the Mermaid City.

With the beginning of school next week comes some changes regarding traffic in and around Wythe County schools. First, school and law enforcement officials are asking parents to dramatically decrease the amount of time they spend in school pick-up lines. And second, Wythe County deputies will be watching for speeders at five county schools.
