23 Va. school districts have taken books off shelves in past two years | Zetta Elliott, a Black educator, author and poet, spoke frankly with fifth-graders at Richmond's G.H. Reid Elementary on Friday morning about social justice and the lack of Black and brown children in books. She talked about how for years her books were tossed to the side by publishing companies, because "there's no market for books like yours." | | |
Fredericksburg City Public Schools receives state grant for electric school buses | Electric school buses will be coming to Fredericksburg City Public Schools, thanks to a $2.6 million grant awarded to the division by the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality's clean school bus program. The grant will offset the purchase of 10 electric school buses and is part of more than $14 million being awarded by VDEQ to public schools throughout the state to replace diesel buses with electric. | | |
Yorktown teacher receives $25K award during Teacher Appreciation Week | YORKTOWN, Va. - One Yorktown teacher received the surprise of a lifetime. During this year's Teacher Appreciation Week, a third-grade teacher at Coventry Elementary School, Taylor Goodson, received a $25,000 Milken Educator Award. The $25K award was presented by the Milken Family Foundation during a school assembly. | | |
RPS to update parents on plan to rezone River City Middle School students | RICHMOND, Va. Montgomery County getting more money for electric school buses | CHRISTIANSBURG - Montgomery County schools will receive just under $600,000 through the state for purchase of two electric school buses, according to an announcement from the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality this past week. The funding, $597,492, is part of more than $14 million being provided to public schools throughout the state to replace old diesel school buses with all-electric buses. | | |
Alexandria School Board approves Narcan in all schools | WTOP News | The Alexandria City School Board voted Thursday to make Narcan immediately available in city public schools. Narcan, or naloxone, is a prescription nasal spray that is designed to reverse opioid overdoses in minutes. A school official told WTOP Narcan will be available in all ACPS schools, where nurses and other designated staff would be trained to administer the medication. | | |
Albemarle County schools to pay thousands in back pay to teachers | Donna Evans has faced many challenges throughout her 21-year teaching career, the most difficult of which was the number of classes and students she had to teach.
