Local school divisions short $201 million in aid because of state error

Local school divisions in Virginia just learned that they will receive $201 million less in state aid than they expected. The Virginia Department of Education has acknowledged the mistake in calculating state basic aid for K-12 school divisions.

As Richneck Elementary reopens, community hopes for return to normalcy

Richneck Elementary students returned to school Monday, more than three weeks after the shooting of first-grade teacher Abigail Zwerner. Teachers and friendly signs, as well as police officers and metal detectors, welcomed the kids back.

Danville names Teacher of the Year

George Washington High School Orchestra Conductor Frenita Griffin was named the Danville Public Schools Teacher of the Year. Griffin, a native of Danville and a product of Danville schools, holds a Bachelor's Degree from James Madison University and a Master's Degree from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro.

The King and Queen County School Board started the new year with reorganization of the board. Celestine Gaines was nominated to remain as chair and Harwood Hall as vice chair. This will be her fourth year in a row as chair, as well as two previous years.
