Charlottesville City Council and School Board to hold budget work session

The meeting is to be held at the Charlottesville-Albemarle Technical Education Center at 1000 East Rio Road. A public comment period is scheduled to follow the work session. Members of the public who wish to attend the meeting virtually can pre-register online.

Lynchburg City School Board votes to keep opt-out policy for sexually explicit content

The Lynchburg City School Board voted on how to move forward with its sexually explicit content policy. The Board voted Tuesday night to keep the opt-out policy instead of changing it to an opt-in policy; which some on Lynchburg City Council were pushing for.

Senate votes to strip Youngkin appointee to State Board of Education

Senate Democrats on Tuesday evening voted to remove a member from the State Board of Education who in 2020 led the fight against admissions policies at her son's Fairfax County high school that aimed to boost Black and Latino enrollment and resulted in fewer Asian Americans being admitted.

Education savings account bills fail in both House and Senate

All four bills put forward by Republicans this year to let parents use state education funding to cover the costs of educational opportunities outside the public school system failed to make it through this year's General Assembly. One bill carried by Sen. Amanda Chase , R-Chesterfield, died in the Democrat-controlled Senate.

6-year-old who shot his teacher choked another teacher 'until she couldn't breathe,' lawyer claims

A 6-year-old Virginia boy who shot and wounded his first-grade teacher constantly cursed at staff and teachers, chased students around and tried to whip them with his belt and once choked another teacher "until she couldn't breathe," according to a legal notice filed by an attorney for the wounded teacher.

A senior at Fauquier High School announced Monday, Feb. 6 he is running for the Center District seat on the Fauquier County Board of Supervisors. His top issues include education, development and affordable housing.

Roanoke schools see 'significant improvement' by bus contractor

While driver hiring problems persist, Roanoke City Public Schools officials believe that "significant improvements" have been made by Durham School Services in making school buses run on time. During a school board meeting Tuesday, officials from Durham gave an update on steps they have taken to resolve persistent issues.

Virginia Attorney General holds town hall on Asian discrimination in schools

Virginia Attorney General Jason Miyares and the Asian American community in Fairfax County held a town hall meeting to discuss discrimination against Asian people in Northern Virginia. Miyares currently has two open investigations related to Fairfax County Public Schools.

Virginia senate passes bill requiring AEDs in public schools

The Virginia State Senate has passed a bill that will require automated external defibrillators (AEDs) in every public elementary and secondary school across the commonwealth. Introduced by Jeremy McPike (D-Prince William), the bill is a response to NFL player Damar Hamlin's sudden cardiac arrest during a regular season game in January.
