Two dozen Southwest, Southside schools to get state construction grants

The Virginia Board of Education voted Thursday to approve school construction grants for 40 projects across the state, including 24 in Southwest and Southside. The funds total $365 million, providing 28 school divisions with money to put toward renovations, additions or new construction.

Strayer recognized by school board

Dr. Sandy Strayer was recognized with a resolution by the Henry County School Board for her 31 years of service. Strayer will retire at the end of this school year, making the School Board meeting on Thursday the last one she will attend as the superintendent of Henry County Public Schools before the end of the school year.

Norfolk, Newport News and Suffolk receive grants to renovate, replace schools

The Virginia Board of Education on Thursday approved construction grants worth roughly $365 million for schools across the commonwealth, including in Norfolk and Newport News. The money comes from the $450 million appropriated to the School Construction Assistance Program, which passed during the 2022 General Assembly special session.

Franklin County School Board approves CTE building location

FRANKLIN CO., Va. (WDBJ) - Franklin County Public Schools is one step closer to having a career and technical education facility. Franklin County Board members have unanimously approved the location of a CTE building. The plan is to build the facility on a 40-acre property behind Franklin County High School.

Frederick County supervisors remove fourth high school from proposed capital plan

The Frederick County Board of Supervisors removed a potential fourth high school from their proposed 2023-28 Capital Improvement Plan (CIP). The plan, which is strictly advisory and could change in the future, has not been officially adopted by supervisors, however.

13 Bethel HS band seniors get $425,000 in scholarships

HAMPTON, Va - Students in Hampton will soon take their talents to the next level. With graduation only a month away, several Bethel High School band members are already celebrating. Students in the marching band collectively received close to half a million dollars in scholarships. Thirteen Bethel High School seniors received band scholarships worth $425,000.

Virginia Celebrates Teacher Appreciation Week

EdNews Virginia | May 12, 2023 It's officially Teacher Appreciation Week in Virginia. Across the Commonwealth, PTA's and PTO's have been organizing to deliver treats and other tokens of appreciation to classroom instructors. Various businesses are offering discounts or freebies to educators as well - McDonald's, for instance, is giving away medium-sized beverages to Virginia teachers through May 12.

2023 Conference on Education, July 13, 2023, Hilton Richmond Hotel & Spa at Short Pump

We will kick off the 38th annual VSBA Conference on Education with the 2023 Virginia Teacher of the Year, Ms. Fabiana Parker from Spotsylvania County Public Schools. Following her presentation VACORP will help present the 2023 Excellence in Workforce Readiness Awards. Next, join other school division leaders from across the state and choose from a variety of mini-workshops which highlight successful practices in Virginia’s school divisions. Conference attendees will leave with many great insights and practical ideas. After the roundtable presentations, attendees will break into optional regional meetings to discuss pertinent issues and topics. During lunch, the annual VSBA Food for Thought 2023 winners will be announced. Attendees will also hear from the recipient of the 2023 Student Essay Scholarship.
