Thomas Jefferson High School named winner in nationwide NASA challenge | The Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology was announced as one of 60 nationwide winners in NASA's TechRise Competition on Thursday. | | |
School officials were told 6-year-old had gun before teacher was shot at Virginia school, superintendent says | Administrators at the Virginia school where a first-grader shot his teacher learned the child may have had a weapon in his possession before the shooting but did not find the handgun despite searching his bag, the schools superintendent said. | | |
Proposal to make meals free for all Virginia students at all schools | There is a push in the General Assembly this session to make breakfast and lunch free for all Virginia students. Albemarle School Board renames Meriwether Lewis Elementary | Meriwether Lewis Elementary School in Albemarle County will be officially renamed Ivy Elementary School after a unanimous school board vote Thursday evening. The decision was made in spite of a community survey conducted late last year that found an overwhelming majority preferred keeping the name. | | |
Rockingham County Expands High School Course Offerings | As the workforce changes, so do the learning needs of students while they're still in public education. School divisions must look at what their offering students in the way of courses and decide every year whether they need to omit, change or add course offerings. | | | |

New Kent superintendent nationally recognized for communication efforts | During his four years at New Kent County Public Schools, Superintendent Brian Nichols has made technology a priority. Now, he's being nationally recognized for his efforts by the National School Public Relations Association. | | |
Facing teacher shortages, legislators propose ideas to bring up pay, lighten workloads | Lawmakers proposed a range of bills that aim to address low job satisfaction among public school teachers. The state's Joint Legislative Audit and Review Commission recently found that 10,900 teachers left the workforce ahead of the current school year. | | |
Cumberland schools, organizations detail plans for the new year | Heading into a new year, many of the local departments, agencies and community service providers in Cumberland County are off to a strong start. However, at the first Cumberland County Board of Supervisors meeting of the year, one organization gave the unfortunate news that it's closing its doors. | | |
Board approves School Security Committee | The Pulaski County School Board met for their regular January meeting and one of the topics discussed and later approved was the formation of a School Security Committee. 2023 VSBA Capital Conference, January 30-31, 2023
This year’s two-day Capital Conference will kick off with a budget and economic outlook for 2023 with the latest update on the Commonwealth’s financial picture. After the budget presentation there will be a conversation between Former Virginia House of Delegate Chris Saxman and Dr. Bob Holsworth with their perspectives on the landscape of Virginia politics in 2023 and beyond. Following this session, attendees will hear from VSBA’s own, J.T. Kessler and Stacy Haney on the happenings at the Capitol for the 2023 Virginia General Assembly.
