State announces equipment grant for high schools and technical centers

The Virginia Department of Education has awarded grants to 16 school divisions to upgrade their STEM and career and technical education (CTE) facilities. Each recipient will get $37,500 (of a total $600,000 awarded) to purchase new equipment or make improvements.

Arlington public schools suspend overnight field trips to Outdoor Lab

Arlington Public Schools has suspended overnight field trips to the Outdoor Lab after an "incident" at the campsite and natural classroom in Fauquier County. Henrico County Public Schools will explore moving forward testing weapons detectors over metal detectors, administrators announced during Thursday's monthly school board meeting. Superintendent Dr. Amy Cashwell said the move is part of the district's layered safety approach, which she said administrators are continually evaluating and supplementing.

VSBA student essay contest highlights civility - The Henrico Citizen

For the third year, the Virginia School Boards Association is sponsoring a personal essay/speaking contest open to all Virginia public high school students (grades 9-12). This year's topic is "The Meaning of Civility." Finalists will have an opportunity to present before an audience of more than 300 school board members and administrators at the 2023 VSBA Conference on Education.
