Virginia's board of education delays review of social science standards

The proposed 2022 History and Social Science Standards of Learning, a more than 400-page document which outlines the goals and principals of the state's history and social science education, were initially expected to be ready for a final review in the board's November meeting.

How a Fairfax Co. middle schooler helped plan a spelling bee for Mongolian American students at World Bank - WTOP News

When he was a third grade student in Fairfax County, Virginia, Erdem Dulguun noticed spelling bee posters displayed across the school. The flyers had large bees on them, and because Dulguun loves honey, he thought students would spend time experimenting with bees and making honey.

Supervisors OK $1.3M in carryover funds for Clarke County schools

BERRYVILLE - Clarke County Public Schools (CCPS) will be allowed to carry over to the current fiscal year a little more than $1.3 million school officials were unable to spend during the past year. That decision was made by the county's Board of Supervisors in a unanimous vote during their recent monthly meeting, following a motion by White Post District Supervisor Bev McKay.

Superintendent drives the bus

As he swept the aisle of School Bus 155, Albemarle County Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Matt Haas reminisced on his time as a teacher and coach in Virginia Beach when he drove his wrestling team to and from meets. On Friday Haas volunteered to return to driver's seat of a county school bus in recognition of National School Bus Safety Week.

Facing a critical bus driver shortage, Chesapeake launches massive recruiting effort. It's not alone.

On Thursday, Chesapeake held a bus driver appreciation day - PTAs and schools gave gift certificates and goody bags to their drivers. The district has also collected comments from hundreds of parents expressing their gratitude for their work. Still, Chesapeake doesn't have enough.

Durham School Services hosts event in hopes of filling bus driver shortages

ROANOKE, Va. (WDBJ) - School bus driver shortages continue to affect Durham School Services and cause students to be late to class. But they are hopeful that will change soon. The organization held a community event called 'Meet the Bus" Saturday. People had the opportunity to meet the school buses and talk to the drivers.

Half of Virginia high school out with 'flu-like' symptoms

Half the student body of a Virginia high school has fallen ill, leading the district to cancel athletics and activities for the school through Sunday. Stafford County Public Schools spokeswoman Sandra Osborn said Friday that roughly 1,000 of Stafford High School's 2,100 students were absent from class "with flu-like/gastrointestinal symptoms." Osborn said that school employees were working with the Stafford County Health Department to figure out the "root cause" of the widespread illness.
