Prince William schools employ students still in the classroom

Two students at Independence Nontraditional School in Prince William County now work for the school division as part of the school’s workforce education program.

In the coming weeks, nine more will join them, working in the school division’s facilities department, which oversees construction. The school division’s announcement comes during April, Workplace Readiness Month.

ALLEGHANY COUNTY, Va. (WDBJ) - Alleghany Highlands Public Schools rolled out its proposed elementary school redistricting plan April 6. At Monday night’s school board meeting, the community had a chance to share opinions during a public hearing.

CCHS students explore career opportunities on industry tour

On April 14, students from Carroll County High School participated in an educational open house at Thomas Automation Management Inc. (TAM), a local company that focuses on high-speed laser perforation.

The goal was “to give students a glimpse at what we do at TAM and to put them in contact with local educational institutions,” said Brad Rodriquez, TAM’s managing director.

Smithfield High students learn to ‘stop the bleed’ 

Smithfield High School has launched a pilot program that trains students to stop life-threatening bleeding in a mass-casualty event. By the end of the school day on April 17, roughly 95 of the school’s Junior ROTC cadets were certified in “Stop The Bleed,” a nationwide public-private collaboration of nonprofits and government agencies to teach bystanders what to do in an active-shooter event until help arrives.

Arlington to allow students to carry naloxone in schools as part of opioid prevention efforts

Arlington Public Schools in Virginia is moving forward with a plan that will enable students to carry naloxone — the generic form of the overdose-reversing drug Narcan — in school by the end of May.

At Thursday’s board meeting, Superintendent Francisco Duran said the county is aiming for students to be able to carry naloxone by May 26.

A new law recently signed by Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin will require law enforcement officials to notify school systems whenever employees are arrested for certain offenses.
