The Albemarle County School Board voted down a proposed resolution from teachers that would have allowed most division employees to negotiate a collective bargaining agreement - dealing a blow to the current unionization effort, though next steps are unclear.

When we think of orchestra music we probably think of Bach, Beethoven and Mozart. But some Fairfax County orchestra students are just days away from a world premiere of music that is anything but classical. The Mt. Vernon High School orchestra will be the first to to play a composition written just for them.

Washington County, Virginia's four high schools are slated for improvements this year - thanks to federal funds granted to the school system. Both Abingdon High School and John S. Battle High School are slated for new entranceways while Holston High School and Patrick Henry High School are both set for restroom renovations.

Hampton Roads schools face some uncertainties as COVID cases in the region continue to rise. Shifting entire schools to virtual learning due to the coronavirus has been rare in recent months, but one Portsmouth high school made the move recently after a spike in cases among staff members.

Harrisonburg City Public Schools has received a grant from Kajeet and the Virginia School Boards Association for $30,000. Kajeet is a connectivity service provider. Together the two gave out $270,000 to nine different Virginia school divisions. HCPS plans to use its grant to include all Kajeet's Education Broadband solutions, which include WiFi hot spots, school bus WiFi, LTE-embedded Chromebooks and routers.

A Varina High School junior placed second in the 2022 Congressional Art Competition in Virginia's 4th District. Haley Gantz earned the honor for her work titled "Lois Mailou Jones" (pictured). A Prince George County High School student won the competition, and a student from the Appomattox Regional Governor's School placed third.

The Bedford County School Board is considering adopting two resolutions: one in support of "parental rights," and one in support of BCPS teachers and staff.

Every school day, James Monroe High School senior Renee Pringles is part of the team working to keep the University of Mary Washington's campus grounds clean and beautiful. She spreads mulch, cuts grass, trims shrubs, blows away dead leaves, collects recycling and helps set up for outdoor events such as commencement.
