RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) - The board of Richmond Public Schools has formally voted to shift the 2022-2023 academic calendar. The school year will now end June 9 in 2023 instead of June 23. When the Board laid out the original calendar, they did so recognizing that the last two weeks had the district in session later in June than most surrounding counties.

The Roanoke County School Board amended the division's current budget last week to reflect the increase in revenue it received from the state. Among the notable changes were an increase in teacher salaries for the upcoming school year, an increase of more than $4 million to the major projects fund, and funding for additional student resource officers.

FISHERSVILLE - An educator with more than two decades of experience has been appointed the new principal of Wilson Memorial High School. Crystal Hanger, most recently an assistant principal at Stuarts Draft High, succeeds Vanessa Mundie as the Wilson principal. Mundie left the post after a year for a job outside the Augusta County Schools.

Jordan Fuller spent her day on Tuesday getting her new fourth-grade classroom set up at Lacey Spring Elementary School. Or at least, Fuller began the process. Her predecessor had left a lot of supplies, and she needed to figure out what she wanted to use and what she would store or give away.

A former school health aide in Fairfax County, Virginia, is accused of taking elementary school students' prescription medications and replacing them with allergy pills. Jennifer Carpenter worked at Greenbriar East Elementary School in Fairfax. A grand jury indicted Carpenter on Tuesday on 11 charges, including unlawful drug possession, misbranding of drugs and contributing to the delinquency of a minor.

Some last-minute changes mean it'll be a while before we learn where Manassas City Public Schools will call home. The city School Board last night postponed a vote on a new central office. The governing board had planned to decide during a 6 p.m. meeting on Tuesday.

In the Commonwealth, there are minimum requirements that school divisions must meet, as laid out in the Code of Virginia, when it comes to security.

When Southampton County voters cast their ballots this November, they will have the opportunity to determine how the county's school board is selected.
