Son of a Tuskegee Airman shares history with Louisa County Middle School students

Louisa County Public Schools is celebrating Black History Month with the help of a special guest. Howard Baugh is a retired United Airlines captain, as well as a Vietnam veteran. His father was an original member of the Tuskegee Airmen, the first Black pilots in the U.S.

Collective bargaining, budget on Albemarle County School Board agenda

The Albemarle County School Board plans to discuss collective bargaining for school workers and hold a budget work session at its meeting on Thursday. Albemarle County Public Schools Superintendent Matthew Haas and school board members are scheduled to talk about bargaining around 7:30 p.m.

'Nothing but magical': Waynesboro's RISE students introduced on floor of the House of Delegates

Students from the RISE after-school program got a chance to not only visit Richmond on Wednesday, but be recognized on the floor of the House of Delegates. Invited by Lt. Gov. Winsome Earle-Sears and Del. John Avoli to make the trip to the Virginia State Capitol Building, 45 people loaded onto a bus for the trip to Richmond Wednesday morning.

Richmond schools' chief of staff quits amid contentious relationship with board

Richmond Public Schools' Chief of Staff Michelle Hudacsko resigned from her post Wednesday amid ongoing tensions between school division administration and some members of the Richmond School Board. Hudacsko wrote that she is proud of what she has been able to accomplish over the last five years, including facility improvements, the negotiation of collective bargaining agreements and management of the school division's budget.

Some Fairfax Co. board members call for quick review of AP African American Studies course

Some school board members in Fairfax County, Virginia, are calling on Gov. Glenn Youngkin to quickly approve the Advanced Placement African American Studies course slated to be offered at a handful of high schools next fall.

IWCS budget asks for $31.4 million from county for 2023-24

Superintendent Theo Cramer is asking Isle of Wight County to contribute $31.4 million to its school system next school year, a $4.6 million increase over what was given last June. Cramer proposed an $83.2 million 2023-24 budget to the county's School Board on Feb. 21.

Teacher, school employee raises proposed in Augusta County's budget

Augusta County Public Schools' proposed first draft of the 2023-2024 fiscal year budget continues to focus on salary increases, student emotional needs and renovation projects. During the school board's budget work session Thursday, board members and administrators discussed specifics of the draft, which will be presented during next month's board meeting on March 16.

Colonial Heights schools business chief tapped as 'acting' superintendent

For the first time in almost four years, a school week began in Colonial Heights without Dr. William Sroufe in the superintendent's chair, and an interim successor is expected to be chosen Friday. In the meantime, Troy Hedblom, the system's assistant superintendent for business services, has been named "acting" superintendent.

Danville School Board approves agreement for new Johnson Elem.

Danville School leaders have signed an agreement to completely overhaul an elementary school. The School Board Thursday signed a comprehensive agreement with Branch Builds for a brand new G.L.H. Johnson Elementary School. Superintendent Doctor Angela Hairston says they signed an interim agreement for the work last fall.
