Page County Public Schools launch app to improve response time in active shooter situations

LURAY, Va. (WHSV) - Page County Public Schools is taking steps to be prepared in the event of an active shooter situation. The school division will soon begin using the LifeSpot app. All school staff will have the app on their phones.

County School Board Gets Update On Future Construction Projects

Every year the Rockingham County Public Schools' Capital Improvement Plan is updated to represent a change in need or simply to add another year to the 10-year plan. After being approved by the CIP Committee, RCPS Superintendent Oskar Scheikl presented the updated document to the School Board at a meeting on Monday night.

One arrested after social media threat, Galax City schools shelter in place lifted

GALAX, Va. - Galax City School students and staff are currently sheltering in place due to a threat made on social media, the Galax Police Department said. Police said the threat is being investigated and there will be more officers at the schools for the rest of the day.

Amherst School Board receives first read on policy addressing sexually explicit materials

A first read of a proposed new policy on sexually explicit material in Amherst County Public Schools was presented to the county school board on Nov. 10. Fairfax Co. weighs changes to high school grading policy - WTOP News

Virginia's largest school system has started the process of reevaluating its high school grading policy, after principals reported variation in grading processes from school to school. Sloan Presidio, Fairfax County Public Schools chief academic officer, said during a work session Tuesday that the county hadn't reviewed grading and reporting practices in over five years.

Alleghany Highlands students learn about medical careers - The Recorder Online

Erich Grant of Randolph-Macon College makes a presentation to Alleghany High School and Covington High School students. Alleghany Highlands Public Schools and Randolph-Macon have partnered to create a pilot program called Advanced Healthcare Pathways. It's designed to give high school students an in-depth look at medical career options that require advanced education and training.

Two Martinsville schools will implement key card access points on all classroom doors

MARTINSVILLE, Va. (WDBJ) - Martinsville Public Schools will soon enhance security measures at two of its schools. Martinsville City Public Schools recently received a $200,000 grant from the Virginia Department of Education. The funds will be used to add key card access points to all classroom doors in Martinsville High School and Martinsville Middle School.

Social media threats against Huguenot High prompt increased police presence

An increased number of police will be present at Huguenot High School in Richmond on Thursday in response to violent threats circulating on Instagram against individuals at the school. Anonymous posts with derogatory claims about individual students led to fights at school, and now violent threats against groups of people at the school, according to a top school district official.
