Mecklenburg County's new high school and middle school complex has received a temporary certificate of occupancy, paving the way for staff to move into the new building as the Sept. 12 start of the new school year approaches.

The Richmond School Board voted 5-4 Tuesday night to defeat an effort to scrap the RPS curriculum as students prepare to head back to school. Superintendent Jason Kamras said such a "tectonic" change would cause upheaval for the city's public schools as students prepare to head back to class next week.

Manassas City Public Schools is abandoning a tentative plan to renovate and move its central office staff into the current Manassas police headquarters once the new Grant Avenue police headquarters building is complete. Instead, the School Board and staff have agreed to purchase the commercial building it's currently in, with long-term plans to use more space in the building for career and technical education instruction.

It's back-to-school time for many kids in the Richmond area - including the new freshman class at the Maggie L. Walker Governor's School. It's the first class admitted under a new admissions policy that was approved in 2020, which ended the administering of an achievement test in an attempt to create a more equitable admissions process.

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC)- Governor Glenn Youngkin said he is fast tracking a plan to reduce teacher shortages. It comes as some fear recently approved pay raises were too little, too late. The Virginia Education Association (VEA) found, as of Aug. 11, nearly 10,500 job openings were posted by school divisions statewide, many of which were teaching positions.

All schools offered free breakfast and lunch to K-12 students in the state for the last two years, but those policies created to support families during the pandemic have expired. This means that families who do not qualify for free or reduced lunches will have to pay for meals this school year.

Kelvin Davis, an associate principal at Halifax County High School, has been named the school's principal by the Halifax County School Board. Trustees approved the appointment during a special meeting Monday night in which personnel matters were discussed in closed session. Davis will earn an annual salary of $93,586 in his new position.

Emails from the Chesterfield County, Virginia, police department aimed at informing Fairfax County Public Schools that a middle school counselor had been arrested and charged with soliciting prostitution from a minor were sent to faulty email addresses, police said Monday.
