HAMPTON - Every second grader in Hampton City Schools will have swimming lessons at the new Aquaplex facility, starting in January. The program, a partnership between the city and the school district, will provide five free lessons to students in the five basic skills of swimming: water comfort, breath control, floating, kicking and strokes.

The Halifax County School Board will receive details on the design of the new Halifax County High School as well as a cost review of the project when they meet Wednesday evening. The special meeting is set for 5 p.m. Wednesday in the second-floor public meeting room of the Mary Bethune Office Complex.

A school bus accident on Rio Road and Hillsdale Drive last Wednesday has raised questions about the shortage of bus drivers in Charlottesville and Albemarle County. The bus driver was cited for failing to yield while making a left turn, striking a motorcyclist. The motorcyclist was treated for minor injuries.

The day after Labor Day, a fight broke out at George Washington High School during a lunch period. An official - described only as the director of safety and security - stepped in to break it up. He was knocked down and his gun exposed. A security officer quickly recovered the weapon.

CHRISTIANSBURG - A New Jersey superintendent will be the new leader of the the Montgomery County Public Schools. The county School Board approved the hiring of Bernard F. Bragen Jr. Tuesday night. Bragen, whose selection was approved on a 6-1 vote, comes about six months after the board's unanimous dismissal of former Superintendent Mark Miear.

School systems in Northern Virginia say they're reviewing proposed state policies that would change the rights of LGBTQ students in schools. Proposed Virginia Department of Education policies released Friday would require students to use programs and facilities that "match the sex they were assigned at birth" and would require parents to consent to their children changing their names and genders at school.

HAMPTON ROADS, Va. (WAVY) - Police are now investigating after two schools in Hampton Roads received threats Monday. Booker T. Washington Elementary School in Suffolk was the target of a false active shooter threat on Monday, police say.
