FULKS RUN, Va. (WHSV) - Students from Fulks Run Elementary School are counting down the days to their 'once-in-a-lifetime' trip to the nation's capital. Around 30 third graders, alongside teachers and chaperones will be traveling to Washington, D.C.

WINCHESTER - Ten newly-installed signs on the campus of John Handley High School enable visitors to learn about the school's history and namesake. Unveiled during a ceremony Monday afternoon, the signs are on pedestals along walkways near the football field and track.

Tunstall High School agricultural education teacher and FFA advisor Jessica M. Jones received the national California Casualty Award for Teaching Excellence on May 5 during the NEA Foundation Salute to Excellence in Education Gala held at the Anthem in the District Wharf of Washington, D.C.

HAMPTON, Va. - Forty-one Hampton City Schools students graduated from Virginia Peninsula Community College (VPCC) with associate degrees on Friday, before receiving their high school diploma. One of the 41 students is a part of the Governor's School for Science and Technology, and the 40 other students are a part of the Virginia Peninsula Community College Academy of the College Experience (ACE) at Phoebus High School.

The Norfolk School Board is set to vote on a new sexual education curriculum, which includes sexuality and gender identity concepts in its instruction, during its Wednesday meeting .The Get Real curriculum for grades 6 through 12 up for approval updates the division's family life education.

CHRISTIANSBURG, Va. (WDBJ) - Montgomery County Public Schools is working to reduce its proposed budget by over $4.5 million. MCPS requested over $62 million from Montgomery County but only received $58.4 million. Another reduction of $874,903 comes from the Virginia state budget. These reductions mean tough decisions have to be made within Montgomery County Public Schools.

Galax City Council has approved a school budget for fiscal year 2024 totaling $20.75 million. The total includes $4.06 million the school system is requesting from the city. This is the same amount of funding that Galax City Public Schools has requested from the city for many years.

On Thursday, the Virginia Department of Education announced its 2023 Computer Science Educators of the Year to recognize computer science educators in six different categories.

HARRISONBURG, Va. (WHSV) - Harrisonburg City Public Schools (HCPS) are working to make school grounds safer. Tuesday night, Dr. Michael Richards, Harrisonburg City Schools Superintendent, gave his safety report and had new ideas on how HCPS can maintain safe learning environments.

Franklin County Public Schools were closed Monday following a ransomware attack that is still impacting the school division. According to a statement from Franklin County Public Schools Superintendent Bernice Cobbs, the decision was made to cancel classes Monday in the interest of on-campus security as the impact of the cyberattack was being reviewed.
