It's a case of "who done it" and you have to solve it. Four students with Hampton City Schools have been working with Hollywood actors Trent Garrett and Jacob Young to create "Timecode." It's a mystery-thriller immersive theater experience that will be played at Hampton City Schools' gala on March 24.

"Some type of system where we can get our Black youth more tutoring programs and more programs to build bonds within each other," he said. "So, that way, we're not having as many dramas and so much negativity in our community, and more getting ready for that upper-level education."

Hanover County residents are uniting to defend the name of John Manuel Gandy. Despite opposition from the community, the Hanover County School Board has moved to form a special committee tasked with making a recommendation on the district's historic school building, John M. Gandy Elementary.

To get more public feedback on an opt-in policy for sexually explicit material in Amherst County Public Schools, the division is planning to send out a community survey. The Amherst County School Board approved the policy in December with a specific measure that all parents are required to opt in their students to lessons when sexually explicit material is included.

The Halifax County School Board discussed safety measures in the schools and approved new science textbooks in their Monday meeting. The board met at the Southern Virginia Higher Education Center, in a departure from their usual meeting place in the Mary Bethune Office Complex.

Common Sense has recognized Fauquier County Public Schools as a “Common Sense District.”

The recognition acknowledges the school division's commitment to creating a culture in which the whole community is invested in helping kids thrive as digital learners and citizens, according to a news release from the division. 

Several School Board members and administrators were on hand to press their case for their $22.4 million budget request – about $2.7 million more than their funding in FY23. Much of this increased funding would be focused on making faculty and staff compensation packages more competitive with adjoining school districts.

Two education buildings should bear the names of groundbreaking African Americans, according to a recommendation from a Roanoke School Board committee. The school division's new admin headquarters would be named for William B. Robertson. Its technical education center would be called the Charles Day Technical Education Center.

Last month, the Frederick County School Board resolved to launch a countywide rezoning for its 12 elementary schools to address overcrowding issues, especially at Jordan Springs Elementary. But the board's Building and Grounds Committee on Tuesday recommended that the full board pursue a smaller study, which would take three to four months, before committing to a comprehensive rezoning process.

Dr. Marc Bergin gave the school board an overview of the 2023-2024 school budget last week. In giving his report, Bergin noted that this is a preliminary budget because the General Assembly has not yet finalized the state budget. This will determine how much money the school division will get from the state.
