2022 VSBA Conference on Education, July 19, 2022 at the Hilton Richmond Hotel & Spa at Short Pump

Join school division leaders from across Virginia at the 37th annual VSBA Conference on Education. Attendees will have the opportunity to choose from a variety of mini-workshops which highlight successful practices in Virginia’s school divisions. Participants will leave with many great insights and practical ideas. After the roundtable presentations, attendees will break into regional meetings to discuss pertinent issues coming up for their particular regions.

Roanoke city school leaders recommend more school resource officers, new mass notification system

ROANOKE, Va. - The discussion of safety in Roanoke city schools continues. Friday during the school board's retreat, additional security options were reviewed. "We discussed with our school board the various measures we already have in place. And then we looked at recommendations and other options for their consideration," said Superintendent Verletta White.

Franklin County school employees to get retention bonuses

ROCKY MOUNT - Employees of Franklin County Public Schools will receive a retention bonus. That includes everyone, not just instructional staff; full-time employees will receive $1,000 and part-time employees will receive $500. The Franklin County School Board voted unanimously to approve the bonuses at its Monday evening meeting.

Warren County School Board cuts some workers from bonus plan

The Warren County School Board buckled under pressure from the Board of Supervisors and cut one-time bonuses due to employees who resigned and will not be with the division next year. The School Board on Wednesday voted 4-1 to approve cutting bonuses from 75 employees who resigned.

New Amherst Co. Public Schools superintendent signs contract

It’s official: Amherst County Public Schools will have a new superintendent. The new selection, Dr. William Wells, signed his four-year contract Thursday night, which goes into effect on July 1 and runs through June 30, 2026. The previous superintendent, Dr. Robert Arnold, is retiring. Dr. Wells is currently the assistant superintendent.

As another national economic downturn lurks, a large majority of Virginia public school districts still have not financially recovered from the stock market crash that occurred nearly 15 years ago. The Great Recession, which began in December 2007 and ended in June 2009, bottlenecked the level of funding that public schools relied on from state and local tax revenues.

Frederick supervisors delay full funding in 3 school budget categories

WINCHESTER - The Frederick County Board of Supervisors voted 4-2 Wednesday night to appropriate 25% of the school division's requested facilities, operation/maintenance and technology funds, but delayed voting on the remainder of the funding until a later date. The vote took place during a special meeting at the County Administration Building.
